Gate Rental Fees?

Tue Jul 12, 2011 7:38 pm

How much is it to rent a gate or a block of gates from the airport authority or how does gate leasing work?

I know there is more to it, but I've been told that basically for the select few gates that AS rents at SEA, they pay $500 every time a plane deboards at the gate, and another $500 every time a plane boards at a gate. So essentially a quick turn costs them $1000

It highly depends on airport and stand. Obvisouly e.g. remote parking is cheaper than a finger position. E.g. just the positioning at HAM airport costs 0,10 Euro per 1 ton per 15 minutes. Permanent parking is at 75,65 Euro per ton per month.
Renting a pier costs 0,54 Euro per ton per 15min.
And dont forget theres lots other costs, e.g. to rent the air conditioning, power supply, baggage handling cars and belts, pushback tugs, towbars, landing costs, not to mention costs per passenger, baggage sorting, etc....

I once heard through the rumor mill at work that it cost my old airline $250,000 to rent a gate @ BOS for a 1yr period.

Can't say if that is remotely correct or not, just what I "heard"
“They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into. I say, let 'em crash.”

I forgot to mention that airlines obvisouly most likely negotiate whole "packages" for their scheduled service, and dont buy "5x 15min of finger and 2x15min air conditioning" as in the list price.

It truly depends on the terms of the lease and length. At my location we have a set rate for the gates we own, but we also have some Airport owned gates we also use at peak hours right next to ours. The diffrence in the rate is just under 600%.

As said before, it all depends on the airport. For some airports such as PDX and LAS, some of this data is readily available on their website.

Possible fees to include when tallying the costs are:

Jet bridge use fee
Departure lounge rental fee (usually on a per sq. ft basis)
Parking fees (if there are some, some are included with the landing fees at some airports, up to a period of time)
Airport (noun) - A construction site which airplanes tend to frequent
