Possible Emergency Landing Here?

Thu Apr 05, 2012 7:52 pm

The old airstrip at Wisley, directly south of Heathrow.
Found this on Goggle Earth and was wondering,

Wisley

In the event of a really serious "out of options" emergency is this viable for an aircraft to land?
Would commerical aircraft know about it?

At least you know the land is clear enough for aircraft usage. About the only reservation is that you have no idea what condition the runway pavement is in...   But I'll take clear land with a pothole strewn runway over power lines, buildings, trees, etc. any day of the week and twice on Sundays

Well, with the conditions bad enough, aircraft have landed in spots as uncomfortable as the Hudson, or middle of a field, so... why not? If the condition is such that you can just not make it to Heathrow, or wherever you were wishing of going.

Anything long, clear, and flat is preferable to hitting trees, hills, or other objects generally unfriendly to aircraft.

In a pinch, a nice flat river can even be used ... it's been successfully tested - once!

At the extreme; I long ago made up my mind that I'd rather go off the end of a parking lot at 40 knots than into a mountainside at 200.

The problem is finding such a place out the bottom of a low overcast.

Some famous aircraft made their first flights at Wisley, including the Vickers Viscount on July 16, 1948. Some early footage of the first prototype Viscount 630 at Wisley here.

Note the inflight demonstration of balancing coins on edge and a pencil on end, a common way to show the much lower vibration level of the world's first turboprop airliner compared to its piston predecessors.

Only the first 2 Viscount prototypes made their maiden flights from Wisley. All the production aircraft first flew from the two assembly plants at Weybridge and Hurn.
