Cwrld At MCO And Other Appropriate Named Fixes

Sun Jan 26, 2014 6:55 am

I was listening to KTTN tower today and heard them give F9 917 their route to MCO they end with "ORMAND BEACH to CWRLD4 arrival". Pardon my lack of knowledge but I just assumed it was an named approach over the Sea World Amusement Park coming in from the west to MCO. Any other sound-alikes in appropriate locations? Theres also MICKX near MCO which would be more interesting if it was MICKY.

Here is the Grandpa 2 approach at Las Vegas.

Fixes named Luxor, Holdem, Betem, tropicana and casino.....

Very normal stuff and found at a lot of airports.

   Exactly
Yes, these are all over the place. I can name a couple off the top of my head that we have at LAX:

DLREY (just west of the airport out over the ocean, appropriately named for Playa Del Rey, the beach and neighborhood that borders the northwest corner of the airport)
DOCKR (also west of the airport, I am guessing they chose it to reflect Dockweiler State Beach--another beach located directly west of the runways)
PEVEE (a lot of us Angelenos use the abbreviation "PV" to refer to Palos Verdes--the large peninsula between San Pedro Bay and Santa Monica Bay-- and the fix is located nearby)

Waypoints in Croatia also tend to have interesting names that - when read in Croatian - make them incredibly easy to remember. Some examples are:

DABAR - "beaver"
KOFER - "suitcase"
KULEN - locally-famous meat delicatessen (a popular waypoint this )
LABIN - a Croatian coastal town (though located some way from the actual waypoint)
NAKIT - "jewelery"
NETKO - "someone"
NIVES - a female name found in some South Slavic languages
OBALA - "coastline" (located, unsurprisingly, on the coast)
PALEZ - when pronounced as "palezh" means "arson"

There are a few interesting ones in Bosnia as well:

KUTAK - "small corner"
PESAK - "sand" (in Serbian)
RUDAR - "miner"
VRANA - "crow" (named after the nearby Vransko jezero lake)
Hawkeye: "It doesn't make any sense."
Radar: "Well, none of it makes any sense. You just have to send in the right number of forms." - MASH 4077

We have a RYTHM THREE arrival at MSY

and along the way you will see:

BLEUZ
ZYDCO
RYTHM
OYSTY

Used to also have a CRAWDAD arrival until the FAA mandated only 5 letters in the name,

now it's the AWDAD SIX arrival, just not the same.

Pennsylvania has an AMISH fix.

Near Gwinn in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, there's a fix called SUOMI. Suomi is the Finnish term for Finland, and there are more people of Finnish blood in the UP than in any place outside Europe. Nice tribute to the local culture.

That's actually a VOR, not a fix, but still appropriate. Many VORs have area appropriate names as well, if they are off airport, such as VUZ- Vulcan VOR in Birmingham, AL. Another is FMG, Mustang VOR, in Reno, which is located on property owned by the Mustang Ranch.

PHL has some fixes on the SPUDS and BOJID RNAV that deal with it's following I-76 for left downwind...SCOOL KYILL EXPRS WHEYY (Schuylkill Expressway) and also on the a fix named EYRIE on the right downwind which is just south of Erie Ave

There is a fix near the GA/FL border by PNS named INBRD.... Hmmmm

Also can't forget the Final Approach Fixes for 4L and 4R into EWR.

DIRTY makes sense, as there is also a waypoint nearby named BYRDS, and both of which are too far from where the Atlanta Falcons (AKA the Dirty Birds) training facilities are.

Also appropriate is the DUPONT FIVE arrival over northern Delaware, which is of course the homestead of the DuPont family, involved not only in the large Wilmington-based company bearing their name but also prominently in the Wilmington/Brandywine Valley history.

KTTS, the NASA Space Shuttle Landing Facility, has some nice themed ones:
EARTH
ROCIT
LEUNA
BLKHL
MOONS
COMET
MISSL
ORBIT
SPCS

Around KMCO and KISM, you'll find lots of Disney and general amusement park ones. If memory serves:
JAFAR
POPYE
JASMN
and many others.

KMCO departure procedures include:
MINEE
BUGGS
COSTR
PIGLT

In Southern Florida, you'll also find the infamous DELDO and MOANS.

True, the RNAV GPS RWY 16 Arrival. http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1401/00678R16.PDF

IIRC, there used to be waypoints over the North Sea named after fishes found in the area. No longer valid though, I think.
