Ryanair/EasyJet To Ponta Delgada

Sun Feb 15, 2015 1:28 am

FR and U2 will both begin service to PDL in a few months.

FR will base 1 B738 at PDL from April 1, 2015, and operate to OPO, STN and LIS.

U2 will operate an A320 from LIS to PDL starting March 29.

I believe these flights will be the first ETOPS flights for both carriers on the A320/B738. Any idea how many planes will be ETOPS certified for these flights? Will it be ETOPS 75 or 120? Based on gcmap.com, ETOPS 75 should be enough for flights to mainland Portugal, but 120 mins is required for FR's service to STN.

(I used 340 kts as one engine inop cruise speed)

I doubt that these flights will be under ETOPS rules, as there are enough alternates within 60min OEI flying time.

The ETOPS option on GCMap is OK for a general idea of the ETOPS operating areas, however it only uses a limited number of airports to base its ETOPS coverage on. Its much better to select the alternates yourself, and create range circle around these based on the OEI operating speeds and diversion times.

For an example, at FL100 and 310kts IAS, the B738 has a TAS of 357kts. Using alternates of Santa Maria (LPAZ/SMA), Porto Santo (LPPS/PXO), and Lisbon (LPPT/LIS), produces the following range circles at 60min flying time:

The map based on A320 speeds at FL100 was very similar.

To STN, you'd need a extra ~100nm to remain within 60min of an alternate:

Is Madeira weather trustful to operate non ETOPS on mainland Portugal - Azores routes?

I know Ryanair will be using their existing fleet with no special procedures or equipment. On the other hand, this may be the start of transatlantic flights for them, which will means ETOPS.

No will will take two flights to get to America. Plus it is a massive detour to go via the azores.. Iceland is better.

Just looking to book this route in September and wondered on the ETOPS as was thinking of Ryanair from STN or TAP via Lisbon.
