Delta’s Ed Bastian To Run The NYC Marathon For A Good Cause

Sun Nov 04, 2018 2:35 pm

Why would one of the world’s most prolific airline CEOs run the NYC Marathon, some may ask?

Bastian is on a journey to raise $1 million for the Rally Foundation, of which he has been a longtime supporter.

This is not the first time Delta’s chief runs with a motive. “Four years ago I ran the New York City Marathon after making a commitment to Delta’s NYC team that I would run the marathon when Delta became New York’s No. 1 airline,” Bastian notes on his fundraiser letter.

Bastian jokes that “despite my memories of the torture that 26.2 miles can inflict on my aging body,” he will run the NYC Marathon for the second time.

“I knew it wouldn’t be easy – serving as Delta’s CEO is a 24/7 job, and finding the time to train would be challenging,” admits Bastian.

Is anyone there or watching the marathon and have you spotted Ed?

Q: Do you prefer training by yourself or with other runners? I enjoyed reading the piece about your joining Delta employees for the 5K run – I am sure that was enjoyable for all of you! I know running with others can be helpful and certainly engaging but I know that I also prefer to have some runs on my own to help clear my head and work on some ideas.

Like you, I enjoy both. I thrive off of other people’s energy, so running with a group keeps me motivated and invigorated, especially if it’s with members of my Delta family. That’s one of thegreat things about marathons – there are millions of people cheering you on to the finish, keeping you excited and in the right headspace. I also enjoy training solo, too, because it allows me to clear my head without any distractions competing for my attention.

In case you don't know, Delta and Ed host a lot of events for various charities, a couple of times a year we get to pull a 757 around ATL, Ed has been there for some of those.

Definitely needs to be moved. Not airline related.
