New PC For MSFS 2020

Fri Nov 06, 2020 8:28 pm

I don't even know where to start with buying a new computer for MSFS 2020. I purchased a good PC that lasted over 10-years from iBuypower for when I wanted to go to FSX. I went back to them to configure a rig, I believe this would be more than enough for MSFS. But anyone have any input?

Anywhere to find something cheaper? Is this an overkill. MSFS and City Skylines is just about the only games I would have on it.

i9-10900KF Processor (10x 3.70 GHz /20MB L3 Cache)-

CORSAIR iCUE H150i PRO XT 360mm Liquid Cooling System

64 GB [16 GB x4] DDR4-3000 Memory

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 - 10GB GDDR6X

ASUS PRIME Z490-P MB

1 TB WD Blue SN550 M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD -- Read: 2400MB/s; Write: 1750MB/s-

Missing anything?

It's Super Overkill but if you have the money, F-k it and just future proof it. VR is going to be hell on the computer anyway so you'll be ready for that.

Someone told me to go with a Ryzen 5600X instead of the i9, for better price and even better performance for games and a X570 motherboard to future proof it. Honestly last time, 10.5 years ago, I never thought about future proofing a machine. A good gaming PC has been something that I have gotten once a decade pretty much. Good luck I guess.

The machine I posted above, a few others did tell me its overkill. But I've always had a marginal/good machine, it would be nice to overkill for once. The price is fine, and (thankfully) not an issue. Just want to figure out what would be best for 5+ years.

No reason to take the i9, for the same price you can get a better and faster AMD. I have a 3700X, my choice now would be at least the 3900X

guessing microsoft finally, for the first time ever, made a FS that doesnt need hardware 3 generations in the future to run at 18fps? I almost want to try it on my PC i built 5 years ago (top of the line 5 years ago, obsolete 4 years and 50 weeks ago, like anything else with computers) but im holding on to windows 7 as long as i can. figure theyll need a year or so to iron out all the bugs in fs2020 and for good payware planes to come out for it before theres any real need to concider switching to fs2020

In viewing Youtube streams of FS2020, I am finding these users are experiencing crash to desktops (not often, but it puts us back into the 32-bit world of FSX/P3D where these things happened all the time). I am waiting a year for technology to catch up, and hopefully some key software programs (GSX, Ultimate Traffic, ADE/AFCAD) will have been released by then.

I think OP is correct in his assessment that is "future proof" and that will be able to play not only today's games but also tomorrow's games.
I wouldn't look at anything older then Ryzen 5xxx series for a "future proof" computer. For motherboard an Asus B550 will do just fine for
most but if you want to increase the amount of M.2_x drives you can have you need an x570- motherboard.

Yes, it is an overkill, omg. I feel so poor, lol
But for mentioning, the Game will require a decent internet connection to achieve its full potential, as most of the world details and textures will be streamed from their server. Although it is possible to play without the internet.

Just wondering...what would the OP's rig cost?

Quite a bit, assuming they can actually get their hands on some of those parts. A ton more if they're daft enough to pay the scalpers.

FS will make mincemeat of the puny 1TB drive once you chuck in a few add-ons and decide streaming the default scenery is stupid and slow (ie you'll end up downloading your regions). You'll probably want a load more capacity soon enough.

I have a very similar configuration to OP's rig and it cost me a fair bit

Here's my config and prices. Prices are in AUD

Intel i9 10900K $999
Corsair 32GB (2x16GB) Vengeance RGB Pro $269
GeForce RTX™ 3090 GAMING OC 24G $3200
Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB CPU Cooler $69
ASUS ROG Z490 MAXIMUS XII HERO WI-FI $699
Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe 1.3 M.2 $228
Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB NVMe 1.3 M.2 $115
Lian-Li LanCool II Mesh Tempered Glass case $169

Altogether it cost me $5748. Those prices are approximate, give or take $5-$10 each side.

Can't believe we're going into TB territory with FS. How many bytes have the typical large payware airport for FS2020 been taking up?

I have built a few computers before and not done a full build since 2007 and as you can imagine that was getting a bit slow....E6600 with 6gb of DDR2 lol.

With the New FS I decided that I would build from scratch again but didn't want to spend a fortune but this time from scratch meant a bit more than previous.
So far I have:
Ryzen 5 3500X
Aorus B45i pro wifi
32gb of DDR4 3200
1tb NVME (don't remember which)
coolermaster 240lite
and an ATI 5700...not the new version.

I am still on a very old GPU waiting for something suitable to pop up but I am now able to do part of my hobby as amatuer statistician and run my mathematical aircraft models again (no need of a good GPU for that)

This time I went ahead and decided that smaller was better and if I wanted the case to be right then I had better build it myself...from sheet metal and pressed angle.

That's my effort, 280x280x160 (mm)
