Flight Sim - Round the world (and Africa and back) in the PMDG 737

Fri Apr 09, 2021 8:48 am

Having some....spare time on my hands at the moment I thought I would do a little bit flying on Flight Simulator (FSX)

The little bit flying turned out to be 43,094 miles and 107 hours of flying!!

I started off by looking at real-world schedules (sometimes having to go a few months out due to airline schedules being all over the place at the moment) before settling on a plan which I will share with you below.

Once I had the route plan in mind, the next step was to make sure I had the correct aircraft. The fantastic library over Avism was a godsend and I found every carrier except one, instead, I picked an all-white aircraft (as If the carrier had leased one)

Aircraft Used

PMDG 737-700WL

This took a total of 4,088 minutes (or 68 hours, 8 minutes) to fly covering 27,958 miles.

Once I had completed this, a friend made the comment I had ignored Africa, so I then planned out a route covering as much of it as I could in the 737 and I think I did a pretty good job!

B738 PH-HZM Transavia Casablanca Amsterdam HV5750 1265 193
B738 PH-BXZ KLM Amsterdam Dublin KL 945 472 93

This took a total of 2,319 (or 38 Hours 39 minutes) to fly 15,141 miles

I used real weather (Active Sky) and all flights were planned using LittleNavMap.

Flights were flown using the Logitech Saitek Pro Flight Yoke and Throttle Quadrant, Flight Rudder Pedals, Flight Switch Panel and Flight Multi Panel

This was a good read, thank you! Sometimes I’m also doing around the world trips but usually in smaller planes like the Carenado Saab 340 or PMDG Jetstream 41. That’s quite fun as well.

Did you use any scenery? If so, especially in Africa I’m interested to know which ones you used.

Hey Park, thanks for the comment.

No, no special scenery this time. I have flown around the world in a 318 before, but never tried it in a small prop, that would certainly be a good challenge to do!!

I've begun a similar thing with a Cessna Slowtation. Switzerland - Greece has taken me a few days. I like doing shorter hops, because the biggest fun in flying is trying to land at every suitable airfield along the way - under the real weather conditions.

I never check the weather at the destination, I just try to land. Hand-fly CAT III? Using only an NDB, without knowing the runway heading? I'm always testing my limits.

I know what you mean Turtle!!! I don't really use the ILS system and hand fly all the approaches in the 737! Some of the United Island hoper routes did get a little dicey at times, TINY runways that just about take a 737, limits on fuel to be able to hop to the next one!!!

A friend sent me the below the other day. The route takes you to every country, and every state in the world!

Ah, I remember doing trips like that back in the FS9 days :cloudnine:

Came up with some pretty obscure and interesting routings, sometimes I'd have the whole trip planned and other times just decide where to fly to next on a whim. I remember when we used to have FS screenshot competitions here. Good times.
