Aviation abbreviations and acronyms that you still don’t know?

Fri Aug 12, 2022 10:50 am

Hi,

Firstly apologies for posting in this forum but I’m not sure what forum this question should really be in. But anyway I was recently pondering the large amounts of acronyms and abbreviations in aviation and stuff and thought that it might be interesting to post a general kind of question on them?

Maybe people could post challenges or answers or interesting ones or anything like that really? But for me maybe I’ll try and start with just a simple one which is MRO. After so many years I still have no idea what this stands for although it is most likely something to do with maintenance I think. But anyway any thoughts or questions or answers would be welcome only also if this is too vague a topic please feel free to delete.

With many thanks,

MRO = Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul

I'm still wrapping my head around the differences between ETOPS and EDTO (familiar with the former; the latter not so much).

Found in the main civil aviation forum a few days ago:

BOGOF

Huh? Buy One, Get One Free. :roll:

I guess they were hoping that would catch on like those mythical A350-1200s and A350-1400s that everyone always talks about. :rotfl:

Hi,

Just to say many thanks for the info regarding MRO. I really should know that by now but I guess reading magazines and stuff I'm so used to seeing it in it's abbreviated form I just kind of get the general idea(!)...

As for the other though also apologies in that I have no idea about EDTO but I assume it's maybe fairly new and a similar thing to ETOPS? And ETOPS stands maybe for Extended Twin engine Operations?

And finally if anyone is curious maybe another two?

1. AMSEL? Is that a thing like SEL being single-engine license?
2. FADEC. I believe this was something to do with automatic engine control a system in maybe Boeing or Airbus aircraft?

Anyway with many thanks again for that and best wishes again,

Hi (again thanks!),

Many thanks and I guess now BOGOF is something that I have heard mentioned more recently but not in aviation more like when they are talking about crisps/chips and supermarkets here on talk radio. To be honest the acroynm kind of reminds me of the UK phrase "bugger off!" (for lack of a better term sorry!). But then I guess if one went to a vig plane manufacturer and asked for buy one get one free that might be what they tell you(!) (Sorry that was a really bad joke!).

Anyway with many thanks again and will have maybe to think if I can come up with some more.

With many thanks again from here,

EDTO is Extended Diversion Time Operations. They're basically one and the same.

Full-authority digital engine control.

EROPS is another one - Extended Range Operations.

INS = inertial navigation system
AFCS = automatic flight control system
FD = flight director
ZFW = zero fuel weight
ZFCG = zero fuel centre of gravity
MWS = master warning system (that infernal bing, bing, bing!!)
TMO = maximum operating temperature
MSU = mode select unit (on an INS, where you choose off, align, nav, ATT, etc - also has the nav ready light)

Hi (again thanks),

So just to say another many thanks for the contributions. A few I knew but more also that I didn't so is appreciated.

But there are so many that I think I kind of know but do I really...

ATIS = Automated Traffic Information Service?
AWOS = Automated Weather Observation Service?
MCDU = the Airbus equivalent of FMS?
VASI = Visual Alignment Slope Indicator?
VOR = no idea but I know what it is?

Anyway I know I could just Google all this but still hopefully not too boring. And two big ones which I really should know but more just for time. AM and PM? How many times do I use them in everyday life even and do I know what they stand for maybe not?

Anyway with many thanks again,
