Who Builds Model Aircraft?

Just wondering who all builds model aircraft, I just started to really get into it, I just finished a F-15E Strike Eagle (1/48) I also did my first airbrush and found it much better then handbrush and what not.

I build models out of Balsa Wood, no plastic for me!

Currently i'm working on a F-14, next in line is a DC3 with a 36" wing span!

Balsa wood is so much better than plastic, if you have never done a balsa model, try it. It shows the structural parts of the acft...

Sam: I used to build Guillows balsa models as a kid, and want to get back into it. Do you know of any good websites related to this hobby? And you are correct about balsa and the structural aspect, I love it.

I do.I have a big collection:F-15,F-16,Jas 39 Grippen, 2 A340's,DC-10,B727, 2 747's, DC-9, Mig 15, Spitfire,Hawker Sea Hurricane, Bf 109, Su 27, and many many more.I also find better the airbrush, but I usually use regular brushes for the dirt and oxidation effects.I also have 37 Gemini and Dragon airliner models.

I dont do balsa because they are not nearly as accurate or detailed as the plastic ones that are much more of challenge to build, none the less paint.

AR1300, Revell has the best F-15E on the market, Tamiya has the best 1/48 P-51 Mustang etc, Italeri has the best DC-3, every company differs. As for Gemini and Dragon, I have 68 of them.

I specialise in custom-painting the plastic kit models I build (all large-scale widebodies). I paint them all in my special, one-off "Smith Airways" schemes (inspired by Irish/Celtic design) in metallic green and gold.

Here they are:

1) 1:125 Heller 747-100 (Smith Airways): Metallic green upper half of fuselage, with two-tone (light green and gold) cheatline and gold block lettering. Gold tail with green shamrock. Metallic green engine nacelles.

2) 1:100 Doyusha 747-100 (Smith Airways): Newer livery: Metallic green fuselage, with silver underbelly and thin gold band around bottom of green part. Gold Celtic lettering on fuselage. Metallic green tail with gold Celtic knot design (similar to BA's Colum tail design). Metallic green engine nacelles with gold band around front of them.

3) Monogram L-1011 Tristar in unknown scale: Formerly Eastern, recently repainted in an experimental Smith Airways livery featuring metallic ruby red and sapphire blue, celebrating my hometown. Metallic sapphire blue upper half of fuselage and tail and engines, gold cheatline below windows, and metallic ruby red lower half of fuselage.

Now under construction:
Revell 1:144 Airbus A380 (Smith Airways): Entire fuselage metallic green, tail metallic green with gold Celtic knot design (BA Colum-style), gold Celtic lettering on fuselage, and metallic green on engine nacelles.

When a large-scale 787 Dreamliner model comes out, I'll try a new variation of my Celtic Smith Airways livery!

I have built model airliners in the past but have not done any recently. My favorite is the 1/72 Heller 707-300. Flight deck had decals for the instrument panel, center pedistal, dual control columns and FE's position. I don't recall the exact wingspan, only that it was about 3.5 feet-just enough to require the model be turned on its side to fit through the doorway when completed! Presently I have so much other stuff, I would not consider resuming model airplane building at this moment.

Burnsie, I see you have the Airfix 737-200 on your list - a good friend of mine and I have recently completed that kit (we each had one). We never use the airline depicted on the box - mine was completed in British Airways livery since that was the first jet plane I ever flew on.

My friend has over 90 kits on the shelf, waiting to be built - I don't know where he is going to find the time to build them!

We enjoy the hobby...just have one complaint: here in South Africa you don't get 1/144 Boeing 777 kits yet!!

I sure do!! Have listed passenger types on here before - too many to repeat that again!! All Hasegawa 1/200 except for about 4 or 5. Around 350 and counting. Even the Hogans I get I'm adding detail to.
Military aircraft is over 200 - Mostly build 1/72 for these types. Size is good and can have plenty of them(just like 1/200 passenger). Manufacturers vary - Most are Hasegawa, but also Fujimi, Revell, Italeri, AMT/Ertl, Esci, Airfix, Academy, Hobbycraft, Trumpeter, even Special Hobby. I'll probably try more short run types now as they have different and interesting subjects. You can only build so many mainline types - I have build over 25 F-16s alone, never mind Eagles, Hornets, MIG-21s, Phantoms, Starfighters, etc.

I have a few projects I'm working on.
1.Testors 1/72 scale DC-130A-Drone Carrier US Navy VC-3 Sqdn.
2.Testors 1/72 scale AC-130A Gunship, USAF Special Ops.
3.Airfix 1/72 scale C-130H, which i'm going to convert to an LC-130, with Microscale Decals that I just picked up off of Ebay.
-I'm looking for a Revell 1/144 scale C-5A or C-5B kit. Very rare these days

I have others, but may not build them because I don't have the room.
Entex 1/100 Scale DC10-30 with Laker Airways and American Airlines Decals.

Revell 747 Shuttle Carrier, with Space shuttle. I built it with Runway30 South African Airways Decals. Wings and horizontal stabs are detached, so it can sit in the box. All transfers and paint is done, just isn't fully assembled

MPC 1/144 scale 727-200 with AA decals
Heller/Humbroll 1/72 scale 707-300 with BOAC, AF, and TW decals
Here's a great site for aftermaket decals i case you don't know. They have great graphics and produce great results. I 2nd place in a contest with a Minicraft 707-300 straight-pipe with South African Airways Decals. Great decals

Don't forget to add some pictures of it!
I painted the red tail of my SR MD-11 today,
and that was curiously not easy...

I used paint that was not original modelling paint and it airbrushed extremely hard...
I will upload a shot later today when I tweaked the little faults!

BTW, do you use Humbrol 22 (white)?
It changed in the beginning of the year from composition and it really sucks to me...

And off course modelling many european airlines requires a lot of white! Wink

Concerning the colors, I use Revel paint or Tamiya. The latter makes a nice acrylic white.

What airbrush do you use? I have the standard from Revell, not great, but it's OK for what I need.

At present, I work on 12-15 more models. I intend to build some airport buildings as well, but I haven't started with that, yet.

This is an exellent refererence shot I used for the tail because no good tail close up of HB-IWI was available...

As I said in an earlier reply (reply 7), I specialise in one-off, custom fantasy models in my "Smith Airways" colour scheme (to promote my private airline, to honor my favourite planes, and honor my Irish-American heritage).

Now I have some photos of my "fleet":

1) Smith Airways 747-100 (new Celtic-inspired colours): 1:100 Doyusha 747 kit (summer 2002).

2) Smith Airways 747-100 (old colours): 1:125 Heller 747 kit (summer 1997).

3) Smith Airways L-1011 TriStar (in experimental livery to honor my small town of Garrett, IN). Monogram L-1011 kit in unknown scale. 1998.

This is the next best thing to having my own private 747!

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy my designs.

The tail design on the Smith Airways (new colours-Celtic) 747 by Doyusha is actually patterned after the BA World Tail design from Ireland, called "Colum" (which itself is patterned after the Book of Kells in the Trinity College Library, Dublin).

I used the basic Irish "Colum" design shape, then applied my own colours (metallic gold with black outlines).

All designs were painted by hand; there are no decals on any of the three models. Even the Celtic lettering on the first model was painted calligraphically by hand. The block lettering on the older version (the shamrock version) was rub-on from model railroad stencils.

The Celtic version is what my private 747 would look like, if I had one!

BTW, if you look closely on the last engine nacelle shot, you see a white square reflection just behind the chrome front ring, that is the reply box of A.net reflecting in the red paint! just figured it out!

Guess what, when I was in a store and saw the QM2 in 1/400, I wanted to build it for my grandmother for Christmas, because she lives in Hamburg and the ship has been there twice, recently. Some 300,000 people went to see it. But I figured I couldn't get it done in time.

Swisser, that 752 with winglets looks nice. My brother flew EWR-TXL on one like that a couple of month ago, and he told me, when he saw it at the terminal in EWR, he was thinking: 757? No, it has winglets. 738? No, too short. What is this? 757? 737? 757?

Respect for doing all this custom work with Braz parts. I am even too lazy to change an A343 to an A342. Actually, I didn't want to put pictures of planes in progress into this forum, but I might do that later today.

Thanks Thorben. Your Airbuses look great as well...coming along nicely. I didn't airbrush my A321...too lazy as I was anxious to get started on my Revell Queen Mary 2 kit. I just spray painted it with Testor's Model Master primer and gloss white. It actually came out better than what I had expected. I'm about 80% done with the QM2. I gotta hand it to Revell Germany...they designed an awesome model with the QM2. I think it will go down as one of the best model ship kits ever made.

I'm building models too. Have to admit that my collection not only consist of airplanes, but also wide selection of cars, trucks, ships, and military eqv.
I build 1/144, 1/72, 1/48, and 1/24 including a few Heller 1/125.

I've been building more or less for the last 8-9 years. (obviously not that much the last years due to being a lot away from home) I try to make them as detailed as possible, but I'm not a pro like some of you. Its always amazing to see how some are able to scratch build and customize those kits down to the tinies details. I did buy an airbrush last year, but haven't been able to use it yet. Still looking for a good compressor. I guess one with an air tank is recommended for a steadier flow of air?

I talked to the guy who runs Braz, he told me they wouldn't come out this year.

You can make severel aircraft from 1 sheet,
an emirates A332, and an Egyptair A342, both the A343 and A332 for the Gulf Air new colors!

I don't know any in Canada, but I know hannants.co.uk in the UK and buyamodel.com in Germany. They ship worldwide.

SAA 747-244B, ZS-SAN, Lebombo. I built this one 15 years ago. I still have the HF antennas on the win tips. The Kit is a 1/144 scale 747, and Runway 3-0 decals. No longer in production. Used AHS detail sheet for 747, which includeds windows, door out lines and leading edge ribs

This is a Laker Airways Skytrain DC10, G-BELO, Southern Belle. The kit is 1/200 scale DC10, with Flight Path Laker Airways decals.

Afghan Ariana DC10-30, YA-LAS. Kit is Revell 1/144 scale DC10, anf the decals are Runway 3-0. This plane is about 12 years old. The glue has turned yellow over the years. Common with old decals

Yep, it does happen. I heard that spraying the whole thing with clear paint when you're done helps, but I haven't tried that yet.

Or decalsetting solutions,
most clear varnishes can get yellow more rapidly then the decal itself...
The Revell varnish is very good, and most acrylic ones don't turn yellow either rapidly.

I currently use a varnish from Graupner, in fact to protect the paint of flying models from fire, gas and oil, and it does'nt react to any decal or paint!

Here's a few pics during the progress of the C-5A I was building.
This was is a 1:144 scale Otaki Lockheed C-5A Galaxy.

I chose to colour it in the the 1980's, early 90's Military Airlift Command markings. After the first application of paint. I used Model Master spray paint by Testors for the drab green, and Tamiya Acryllic water pait for the gray. The grey was a little to light. I thought it would darken over the green.

After applying a primer of the lighter grey, I put on a coat of a darker drab grey. It may not be noticable in the picture, but the grey is more darker, and flat in finish. I also added a lighter colour green to complete the ensemble needed for a proper jungle scheme.

Tail of the aircraft. I used to the decals to make it look more authentic. The decals were for the Vietnam era MAC decals. The decals from the kit were terrible, but I think this has more to do with the age than quality. Most of them just broke apart when I tried to apply them to the model.

I've done this kit, and I am sad to say I was rather disappointed with it. The plastic was thick and the parts were so large it was hard to get a good fit. A lot of resin parts too, if you are good with multi media, then you are in for a good challenge. The decals are trash too and dont comform well around the nose. my model has been done for about 4 years now and most of the decals from the nose have flaked off. I would have used a clear coat, but that would have killed my metalic finish. The accuracy of the mold is not that good either. If you look at the nose head on, it almost has a square cross section!

Go on ebay and search for Otaki C-5A. Its the same mold.

I've been away form building for the past few years and am dying to get back into it. The last model i finished was the Monogram A/B-26 Invader, which came out really well. A pic is below. I just bought on ebay last week the Revell 767 in UA/AA scheme. I built it a long time ago and am looking forward to build it again. I need to get my skills back before i tackle my 1/32 Tamiya F-16!!!!!!
