Now Playing! The A.net Soccer World Cup!

Sat May 28, 2005 4:00 am

Hey Everybody! Let's play soccer!

I'm not sure if this whole idea and the system behind it work well, but I have calculated the whole thing and it seems like we can expect to have some fun with this little game!

Here's how it works: 16 teams can play, so the first 16 A.net members who sign up their team will be in!

How do you create a team? Basically, you need 11 airplanes who are your players. They all need to be in the same color scheme (obviously), except for the goalie, who can have a different one. But still, all your 11 players need to be one airline (that no one has entered with before you). If you've still not understood how it works, look at my team below! (Team Icelandair)

What happens next? As soon as all 16 teams are up, the matches will start! There will be four matches every evening at 22:00 UTC! (I chose this time because it seems ideal for both european and american time zones)
Later, in the finals, there will be fewer matches each day.

The first 4 teams to sign up will be group A, the next four will be group B, then group C and group D. Matches will be according to the following schedule:

Day 1) 1 vs 2, 5 vs 6, 9 vs 10, 13 vs 14
Day 2) 3 vs 4, 7 vs 8, 11 vs 12, 15 vs 16
Day 3) 1 vs 3, 5 vs 7, 9 vs 11, 13 vs 15
Day 4) 2 vs 4, 6 vs 8, 10 vs 12, 14 vs 16
Day 5) 1 vs 4, 5 vs 8, 9 vs 12, 13 vs 16
Day 6) 2 vs 3, 6 vs 7, 10 vs 11, 14 vs 15

Day 7) Winner A versus second B, Winner C versus second D
Day 8) Winner B versus second A, Winner D versus second C

Day 9) The two winners of day 7 against each other
Day 10) The two winners of day 8 against each other

Day 11) Play for the 3rd place!
Day 12) The big FINAL!

OKAY... now how will a match be played? Who wins? Ok, this is how it works: One referee (we'll figure that out before each match, depending on who has time) will do the following at 22:00 UTC: He will simply determine each opposing team's strength number. It consists of every player's last digit of the "times viewed" number of the photo in the a.net database. Since this number is not updated right after each visit, but some while later, it is perfectly fair. Whoever has the higher number, wins!

(For example: Your 11 players' photos have been viewed 12, 45, 333, 25, 3, 77, 548, 2, 99, 105, 12 times. Just take the last digits of all those, at the time of the match, and this team's strength is 42! Easy and perfectly fair, right?

OK! Enough said! Let us begin enrolling our teams! Here's mine, Team Icelandair:

Great, Erikwilliam! Your team KLM is Team 2, Group A. Your goalie seems to be from another team, but that's ok! Now let's wait for the missing teams to join, so that the tournament can start!

Great! Group A is complete!

1) Birdwatching's Team Icelandair
2) Erikwilliam's Selecção Varig (feat. jetBlue)
3) Greenjet's Team Aer Lingus
4) Luisde8cd's Seleccion Viasa (with a goalie that came from Chile and had no time yet for changing his clothes!)

Let's all use the "twoid:" feature from now on, to have 2 images next to each other, ok?

Quoting Birdwatching (Thread starter):
How do you create a team? Basically, you need 11 airplanes who are your players. They all need to be in the same color scheme (obviously), except for the goalie, who can have a different one. But still, all your 11 players need to be one airline (that no one has entered with before you).

Monteycarlos and AR1300,

The teams are made of 11 "aircraft" without a bench (or subs). Your team's score is determined by how many views your team members have accumulated by game time. So having a non a.net photo as your goalie, for example, hurts your team because you only have ten team members with which to accumulate points - kinda' like having a self imposed penalty box. And since EZEIZA has already chosen Aerolineas Argentinas AR1300 will need to chose a new team....

Don't worry about it... I don't really care about points or my team.

Okay, no more sign ups! The lists are full! Let the tournament begin!
The first match will be tonight at 22:00 UTC! Good luck to all contestants!

Here are the teams:

Group A
1) Icelandair (Birdwatching)
2) KLM (Erikwilliam)
3) Aer Lingus (Greenjet)
4) Viasa (Luisde8cd)

Group B
5) Air France (Aerlingus330)
6) Aerolineas Argentinas (EZEIZA)
7) Continental (Senorcarnival)
8) EVA Air (Pipo777)

Group C
9) Olympic (SXFAN)
10) Northeast (Pl4nekr4zy)
11) US Air Force (PapaNovember)
12) US/America West (KCMike)

Group D
13) United Airlines (Yanksn4)
14) Delta (MD11junkie)
15) South African (SA006)
16) Aerolineas 2 (AR1300)

Sorry Monteycarlos I had to bump you out because first you don't have a legal goalie and second you said you don't care that much about it anyway, so I thought maybe you would give your slot to SA006, ok?

So tonight the matches are:
Icelandair / KLM
Air France / Argentinas
Olympic / Northeast
United / Delta

Lets see who will win the inaugural games! Good luck!

(BTW, there should be a prize for the World Champion in the end, right? How about we all add him/her to our RU list? Is that a good prize or not?)

Wow 6 US teams. Could the US finally win a world football competition?  Smile In the Irish tradition I'm just here for the laugh and any wins along the way is a bonus...

RE: Now Playing! The A.net Soccer World Cup!

Mon May 30, 2005 7:12 am

The tournament has STARTED! Today, exactly at 22:00 UTC, eight teams have competed in the first round! I have opened each of the pictures, noted the LAST digit of their "distinct views" number (which means that images with high overall distinct views have no advantage whatsoever, because we're only looking at the last digit!)
All those 11 numbers added, led to each team's strength. If you want to try it and check if I was honest (which I've been ever since my birth!  Smile ) you can do the math yourself. Now you could argue that you will get a different result, because the number has increased after my clicking on it and possible other visitors. However, I have found that clicking the images will not immediately raise the count (have done experiments with asking various people to click, in order to test). Apparently the number is adjusted later, maybe once a day?
Anyway, this means that in the future matches, the teams will be of different strength than what they might have been today! A team with all 8s and 9s in the last digit might plummet to all 0s tomorrow... And LOSE big time!

OK, here are today's results!

1) Icelandair 56 vs. KLM 49
2) Air France 51 vs. Argentinas 40
3) Olympic 60 vs. Northeast 44
4) United 67 vs. Delta 31

So we have 4 winners today! United won the day's highest score with a whopping 67 goals! Olympic could defeat a weak northeast team, mainly because Northeast is wearing their old shirts from the 70s, and also because Olympic had the almighty powers of Zeus behind them. Icelandair won mainly because they are Vikings, and Air France is said to have had the best camouflage  Smile! (Euro-what? Eurobrown!)

But nobody is out yet! Tomorrow we shall see the remaining 8 teams compete, and in the following 4 days the remaining matches of the initial round, before heading into the finals! Remember, the 2 best teams of each group qualify. At this point, the 4 winners have 3 points each, and all the other teams are at zero.

Who wants to be the referee tomorrow night? If you have time at 22:00 UTC, you're in!

Birdwatching,

Can I ask you something?
Is this measured by the times the post is viewed? If so, haven't you noticed that the post view times decreases as you go towards the bottom?

Cheers! wave

No, MD11junkie! This is about how many times each individual airplane PICTURE is viewed. (The large images). So there are 11 numbers (because you have 11 planes), each one has a last digit between 0 and 9. All of them are added, and that's how those numbers come!

So it is perfectly fair. I chose this because it is a completely random number, and because it is not static. It will change during the following days. But one individual can not influence it in a way to make a profit! I admit the whole thingis a little bit complicated, but once you understand the system behind it, you'll see that it is a fair, randum number for everybody!

This is how the Winner is Decided-
You Have 11 team members...Right. Then say that they have been each viewed, 112, 114, 55, 65, 77, 44, 43, 89, 53, 10 times overall (Ever). Take the Last Digit from each number...Which is 2, 4, 5, 5 ,7, 4, 3, 9, 3, 0...Add them Together... Then the overall Total is 43. Lets say that the team that he is playing has a score of 55..Then That team wins...

Hope that Helps,

4) United 67 vs. Delta 31

As Ken "the Hawk" Harrelson and Darren Jackson would say, "You can put it on the board..... YES!"

22.00 UTC

Sorry for asking this, but can someone what UTC is? I know it's a time zone, but where and how many hours (+/-) from GMT? Thanks.

Also, I have no problem with adding whoever wins this to my respected users list.

OK! Third day of matches is over! Here are the results:

Icelandair 67 vs. Aer Lingus 49
Air France 51 vs. Continental 37
Olympic 47 vs. US Air Force 60
United Airlines 44 vs. South African 43

Damn! Makes me look like I'm cheating, with that result for my own team... it's completely honest though, you can count yourselves... Striking victory of USAF against the European Champions, too. And a very tight one between US and SA!

Tomorrow, the following teams will play:

KLM vs. Viasa
Aerolineas Argentinas vs. EVA Air
Northeast vs. US/America West
Delta vs. Aerolineas 2
