Your Favorite Payware Add-on Aircraft For FS9

Sat Nov 19, 2005 4:18 am

Ok so I'm ready to buy a payware a/c for FS. Many months ago I was considering buying EagleSoft's Citation X. It looks great, has great reviews, and there isn't really a decent freeware business jet, other than the default Lear.

Now today I saw the FiftyNorth 737-300/-400/-500 package and it looks really good! It comes with 9 repaints and there are 23 more on Avsim. And it's only US$14.95.

I'm not too interested in widebodies since there are some great freeware a/c out there, like POSKY and MelJet. But I don't think there is a very good 737 line (I know about FFX/SGA/Cantu, but FS crashes every time I want to mess around with the payloads).

So anyway, I'd like to hear from everyone what their favorite payware a/c is (if you have one, obviously).

for me its the level D 767, followed close behind by the PMDG 737NG. The level D gets a bit better framerates than the 737s.

I love the pmdg 747 too but it eats framerates up real bad.

The PMDG is fantastic, as is the Level D. Speaking from personal experience, buy one of those and you won't be disappointed!

Another product that looks absoultely superb is the Ariane Design 737:
http://www.arianedesign.com/

WILCO has also just released a 737, although I'm not sure what its like:
http://www.wilcopub.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=prod_737pic

And there is the FiftyNorth 737 as you have already mentioned:
http://www.fiftynorth.com/

The Level D is published by Flight1, they also have many other offerings:
http://www.flight1.com/

I presume you already know about PSS, but the products I have from them left me slightly disappointed. The new 777 looks good though:

PMDG 737NG is amazing and the best payware add on there is.
I also love PSS Dash-8-300.
Other two favourites would be Ready for Push Back 747-200 very complicated with 300 page manuels. DC-9 Pro which is great and also Flight one Cessna 411.
Level-D 767 I heard is great. And I also like Cap sim 727.
Going to get Level-D 767 and PSS 777 next.

Depends on what you're looking for:

- If you want a GA plane to fly, I'd recommend the Cessna 441 Conquest from www.flight1.com. It's a twin turboprop with good range and speed, and very easy and fun to fly. Eaglesoft makes good products, but you should be aware that if you're looking for as real as it gets, Eaglesoft is somewhat lacking in that department, as none of their planes have a full FMS.

- The best payware aircraft I have overall would be the PMDG 737. Very detailed panel and decent external model. Be prepared to spend some time looking over the manuals, but there's a good tutorial on the PMDG site (get the most detailed one - it's worth it) that'll help you a lot more than reading the manuals will.

PMDG 737 and LD 767 as is Dreamfleet 737, PSS Airbus twins etc are all good. PSS 777 (just bought it) is also great but long flights can be tedious. I recently bought the Eurowings Professional BAe146 from Aerosoft and its great. Short, eventful flights into smaller, difficult airports. Quite frankly the best experience for flight sim, period.

I have PMDG 737, PMDG 747, Level D 767, PSS 777, PSS A319/320/321 and PSS A330 and out of all these the 737 comes up tops!! Great Model and Great Panel. And there are loads of repaints available on their website.

I bought the Citation a few weeks ago (along with the Beechjet 400A and Premier 1) and like all of them.

With the Citation X if you get it into a tailwind of 100+kts at crusie you can see your ground speed in the 600+ knot range. It's fun to be going that fast at FL510 and look down on the airliners crusing 10,000 feet below as you pass them. Big grin

As Mir noted none of them come with a fully functional FMC (the Citation's can do everything but the nav function) but they suit my simming style just perfectly. Just complicated enough to add that extra bit of realism missing from the freeware but not so complicated you'll need to spend hours reading before you can even leave the gate.

Kelly

I'll try to get some Citation shots up in the screenshot forum a little later and get you a shot of the model I've been working on as it's finally ready to be seen by the public.

Ariane is too expensive in my mind.. Every little thing costs extra. I suggest the 737 Pilot In Command form Wilco Publishing. The Feelthere guys made it and its great. http://wilcopub.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=prod_737pic

Just so you know the FiftyNorth 737 does not come with a panel, or even a wing view, all you get is the model. I got it a few weeks ago and am still debating whether or not it was worth the 15 bucks. Only reason I got it was so I could have the WN "Shamu" livery on a 737-300. The controls are a little more touchy than on the FFX 737-300, it has more detail, and the animation for the control surfaces, flaps, and landing gear are smoother. But, IMHO, the lack of a cockpit, wing view, and/or cabin view is very annoying

I thought that FiftyNorth were planning on releasing a panel for their 737. Is that still happening or have they decided not to?

Feelthere 737OG is good, tad buggy but still a very nice addition to the hanger. Havent tested it out fully but from first looks it is good and the full FMC and Weather radar is a super addition.

PMDG 737NG, also a super addition to the hanger. Can be a little heavy on the frames occasionally, but still very nice. By far the best feature of it, is the cabin crew alert button, that is the best  Wink.

PMDG744 have done a few long haulers in it, had a problem recently of FS crashing about 4 hrs into the flight which is incredibly fraustrating when trying to log the hours for my VA ( http://www.bavirtual.co.uk ), but will give it another chance probably February time.

Lvl D 767, super aircraft. Nothing to fault with it. It is a very realistic, super model, very realistic panel with it giving the at the controls feel to it and its just generally a pleasure to fly. I'll be working on this one in the month of March.

PSS 777LR, a cool plane but I think a strange choice by PSS. I am suprized they chose the LR range instead of the standard 772ER but thats there decision. It is a nice aircraft, with quite a few bugs but none that really effect flying this bird, I am currently flying it this month and have done several long haulers in it with no problems. Only real fault is that it captures the v/s altitude incredibly fast which is not realistic to the aircraft.

PSS 319/320/321, basic, easy to fly and crap model. I fly this when I have to but is a nice addition with the CFM sounds and IFDG model based around the PSS panel. Nice thing just to jump in to when I fancy having a quick flight online.

The best one in my mind is the Lvl D 767, however I am yet to fully test the FT737OG which looks, if not on par better than it. I will report back with some screenshots once I have tested it and flown it regularly which will more than likely occur in the month of January.

Thanks...

I have the Shamu livery for the FFX 733, 735, and PMDG 73G. You didn't need the 50N for that. I love the 50N model and price, but I will not buy until wingviews are available. The Ariane looks great but liveries are limited and cost prohibitive. I am stuck in the FFX for the time being...

Unless you are into the FMC's there are comparable freeware planes for every model. I only have the PMDG 737NG's and Vans 717 because I got them before the Kittyhawks and the SGA's came out; both great paywares but could have done without in hindsight...

Where did you find the repaints for the FFX 733? I looked EVERYWHERE for Shamu yet could not find it. If it's on Avsim, then they did a fine job of hiding it from me.

I found 2 WN "Shamu" repaints for the FFX 733 on flightsim.com:

File "shamu3h4.zip" has both the old WN colors and Canyon Blue colors in the Shamu scheme and is done by Sam Kimpton.

File "swshm733.zip" is a textures only file done by Ben Hewitt

Does the PMDG 737-NG model come with a realistic panel?

I like a lot the 737, but the freeware I found, even if satisfying always lacked a realistic panel (by "realistic" I mean a panel that non only has a realistic appearance but also simulates all the instruments, switches, etc. that have a meaning if I want to learn and understand all the normal procedures about a 737).

The PMDG software is the best there is. The panel (within the limits of flight sim) and systems are replicas of the real things. If you are looking for something realistic, PMDG is the way to go.  Smile

Agreed, however if this is your first 'fully functional' model I would recommend something a bit simpler - for the beginner I think it might just be too much - start with something simpler to get yourself familiar with doing starts from cold, check lists and fmc's before moving onto something larger - I started with the PSS Dash 8-Q300 and found it a good aircraft to learn (and fly) and then moved through the PSS range (which I found easier to operate than PMDG) before finishing up with the PMDG 737-800/900.

I realise for some this may not be the ideal way to go as it costs more but I found that it suited me.

Well I don't need to get into PMDG, you guys have already covered that  Smile

However I'd like to mention three other things:

First, Swedeflights airports. Ok they're Scandinavian and hence not of much interest to many of you - but still check the web page and be prepared to be amazed at what these three guys have created, especially the night-shots !  Smile
www.swedflight.com

The other one I use every day is ActiveSky's weather add-on:
ActiveSky's Website

And finally, although voluntary I'd highly recommend you guys to pay Peter Dawson for all of his hard work with FSUIPC, without which a lot of our other add-ons wouldn't work at all.

Good point. In fact, in my current configuration I have a 737 configured with the default panel (useful to learn procedures, check lists and how to fly because I already know where panel items are and how they work) and another one configured with some "more functional" panel, that I use to learn where each item really is and how to operate it/which effects produces.

Of course I forgot to ask if these payware models also come with some useful (in the meaning of being useful to learn how to operate the aircraft in FS9) documentation...

So far I have a few payware aircraft, but my fave has to be the LevelD 767-300ER. I like it so much I'm flying it around the world.

So far I've not managed to stall, crash, or miss the runway with it  Smile

I had one question in regards to the PMDG 737ng and 738/9 line of aircraft:

Do they have dynamic wingflex? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.

I have always been an Embraer fan and I love the ERJ-145 PIC from Wilco/Feelthere, it was very easy to learn the FMC and the systems on it...would be a good choice, if transitioning to jets as far as payware. The E-Jets series from Wilco is great!...the McPhat livery package is a MUST-HAVE! awesome textures  Smile
