Hello

I spend a lot of my time crossing the pond but seem to be one of the few people on Flight Sim who bother to use the official daily NATracks…

It’s a shame when some people ruin it!

Well, I didn't do it today, but I did go from FRA to IAD once on FSX.

Bugger, I knew I had forgot something  Sad

Kimberly, most people are either using the static tracks provided by VATSIM or just going direct nav for simplicity. It usually doesn't bother me, even though I strive to use mostly realistic flightplans (ie. daily NAT tracks, PACOTS tracks, flightplans off flightaware.com etc). The only thing that bothers me is people using slew while other traffic is around. I had a rather lengthy trip FRA-MBJ with the LDS 767 and on approach, I found myself dodging 2 guys messing around with slew.

That would really get to me!!!

I must admit I am sensitive to people not using the right NATracks then having a go at me for being in their way, when I am on the correct path…

Once while on Vatsim I had an ‘escort’ some nice person decided they would fly a Euro Fighter next to me, ATC asked him to stop it, but there was no communication, I think they ended up disconnecting him. It’s a shame when a few people spoil it for the majority…

Oh and not sure why but so many FS users who fly on Vatsim can’t understand the runways at EGLL (LHR). Vatsim users while there is no ATC service do parallel runway approaches and take off at the same time etc – grr I know it’s something small but when you are trying to keep it real it’s something that gets to you – plus I often have my husband who is a real life pilot in my den (study) saying “they can’t do that in real life” lol

Where do you get your NAT Info from? I use Flightaware for US-Europe legs since it supplies the full flight plan and Routefinder (http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/) for Westbound legs. The site uses current Nav Cycles and NATs, though I don't know if the NATs are updated daily.

I use https://www.notams.jcs.mil/ for the NATS and PACOTS tracks, though for some reason todays NATS aren't available.

Don't you know the easy way to fix that? Just fly a Concorde.  Smile Play a game of catch me if you can (and they won't ever catch you - trust me on this).

I totally agree, when on Vatsim I do my best to keep it real and thats what I want people do with me, none of this just taking off on a taxi way stuff  Sad

Thats the best site. Its notmally updated twice a day. Sometimes for East to West tracks it will show 'no active data' its normally because there is so much traffic they are having a change around on the tracks. If you give it 30 minutes or so the data is normally back up there.

I remember flying through Moncton during the event. Thanks for providing ATC enroute.

Could somebody explain how to read a NAT? I can read normal flight plans just fine, but that is confusing me.

Sounds good, I would have participated but Squawkbox still isn't FSX compatible and FSINN is not to my liking. I've found www.ivao.aero to be much more organised and it seems to be 10x more popular in Europe too. Although their "cross the pond" events don't seem to be as good. (Probably due to lack of US activity)

WEST LVLS NIL
EUR RTS EAST NIL
NAR N35A N41C-

The first section gives the valid times for the tracks (0100Z-0800Z on April 1st in this case) and the altitudes (FL310-FL400 inclusive). If you're operating outside of those times or altitudes, the tracks don't matter to you.

The next sections are individual descriptions of each track. Let's look at the first one:

U YQX KOBEV 50/50 52/40 53/30 54/20 DOGAL BABAN
EAST LVLS 320 330 340 350 360 370 380 390 400
WEST LVLS NIL
EUR RTS EAST NIL
NAR N79B N83B N85A-

This is Track U, which starts at YQX (Gander) and then proceeds to KOBEV, 50N050W, 52N040W, 53N030W, 54N020W, DOGAL and BABAN in that order. You can fly at any of the flight levels listed there (so FL320 to FL400 inclusive) if you're going eastbound, and you can't fly at any altitudes going westbound along that route within the NAT airspace (which, as you will recall, is FL310-400 inclusive between the hours of 0100Z to 0800Z - you could fly the route westbound during those times at FL430 or FL290 if you wanted to, or fly it at FL350 outside of those times if you wanted to, subject to ATC permission of course - though since eastbound tracks are designed to maximize tailwinds, I'm not sure why you would want to fly them westbound, which would be maximizing headwinds). There are no Europe routes that are specifically associated with this track, and there are three North Atlantic Routes associated with it (N79B, N83B and N85A - you'll be getting to YQX on one of those airways).

Eastbound tracks have letters that come from the end of the alphabet, and start with the northernmost track and continue southward (so Track U is the northernmost, and Track Z would be the southernmost). Westbound tracks have letters from the beginning of the alphabet, with Track A as the northernmost and Track E (or sometimes Track F) as the southernmost. You pick the track that's right for you based on your route, the winds, etc.
