FS Screenshots As Art.

Thu Apr 29, 2010 6:04 am

I like to save screenshots from my FS flights and use them as Windows desktop backgrounds and to view later. Especially if I'm flying something new. It's cool to pan the view around, zoom in or out and find an interesting angle for a screenshot.

If you look in the "Screenshot" threads, you will find shots that are absolutely beautiful. Every one of them was intentionally angled and framed to give the best view of the aircraft and environment. They are all pre-planned selections of aircraft, location, time of day and weather. Then, the aircraft is flown in a pre-determined pattern to yield the desired result. You can see that a lot of work (and fun) goes in to these screenshots. Many of the screenshots posted are suitable for framing.

I found myself wanting to save some of the screenshots posted for desktop material or to simply view them as many are pics of aircraft that aren't flying anymore. I even requested one member to email me a screenshot that was posted of a beloved ship and livery. As I contemplated requesting another screenshot of a different beloved ship and livery it occurred to me that, hey, this is aviation art!

With FS it is possible to re-create a time in aviation history that has forever passed and capture it in a very realistic and beautiful picture. It is also possible to create fantasy images of aircraft, liveries and environments that never existed as well. Say that you want a picture of a DC-7 in United livery cruising at altitude with the clouds illuminated by the setting sun. With FS it is possible.

Are FS screenshots a form of aviation art? Does anyone know of any FS screenshot "artist" who have presented or sold screenshots as aviation art?

Kevin

I would say that screenshots could be classed as aviation art.
I am not aware of anyone selling them as such.

Time for a new screenshot thread me thinks

Experimenting with new cloud and also that ENB plugin that I read else where. Anyone else use it?

Where'd you get it? All I can find are forum threads proclaiming how great it is

Easy to find but did take me a while to find it!

http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/forum/index.php?topic=7467.0

Scroll to the end of Timest999's post (not the whole thread), just under the picture of the Cessna flying over the sea. Extract all to the FSX folder. They do not overwrite any files so no back up needed.

Gives the scene a blue hue. Might not be to everyones taste. For example I have selected a sunset that does not have a lot of red therefore the blue makes it a little bluer and colder. Need to play about with settings.

Once installed and FSX up and running pressing SHIFT+F12 shows you the differences.

Quite amazing, colours and contrast much more defined. A little unsure during daytime flying. A little washed out at times. It works great for dawn and dusk flying. I've taken some screenies to show the differences and will post here soon.

Hi

Couple of screenshots showing the ENB plugin before and after, taken at sunset hence the slight darkness.

You need to view the full size image as the Airliners.net script seems to enhance colours greately on the thumbs/full size that are inserted below:

Before ENB plugin.

After ENB plugin.

I love the UAL "Friendship" livery. Especially on a DC8 (hint)    Those 200 series Seven-3's used to be a dime a dozen out here @ KONT. Now, they're all gone. Man, they sounded like a rocket ship on TO! I have a source @ Boeing that told me they're working on a re-engined 737-900.

I'd like to post some select screen shots to illustrate my point about FS as art. These screenshots are some of my personal favorites (of course I am biased toward anything with an L-1011 in it) that are good examples of FS as art.

This is an impressive over wing shot by Luftfarer. Excellent detail, exposure and a nice 'Roller" in the shot. I love this one.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2718/4485782026_dedd56f3b6_o.jpg

I found this in The Batmans' A.net profile. Accused him of "holding back" a great shot. Yeah, sure it's a PA. L-1011-500 and I'm drooling simply from that, but this shot looks like it could have been on a safety card or Ad. The Batman has also posted some awesome DC-10 shots as well but I won't hold it against him.

http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww199/xxdarkknight/L-1011-1.jpg

If anyone here knows how to compose a shot, it's Aerdingus. This shot is ready for framing and first got me thinking about FS as art.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss78/kierno84/fsscr015-22.jpg

Not only is it a beautiful ship, but UltimateDelta took the time to position this shot just right for a halo effect. I love this shot. He also posted a pic of a Horizon Air turboprop back-lit by the light of sunset. Also very nice.

http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/ss37/UltimateDelta/2010-4-15_17-3-4-593.jpg

CamilloA380 must have spent hours setting this one up. Not sure if I can call it a "pan" shot. More like a "zoom out" shot. This is what I mean about FS being an art form. Setting up a flight purely for a screenshot. I think everyone appreciated this one.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2717/4541423812_3fab8676d4_b.jpg

I love the exposure and composition of this shot. You'll find photos similar to this in the A.net photo library but how cool is this, creating your own? Check out the reflections on the water and windscreen. Very, very cool.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/fly2hmo/fsscr014.jpg

This shot really illustrates FS as an art form. The scenery is as much part of the shot as the aircraft is. Absolutely beautiful.

http://www.totalnfs.net/c_d_files/gcn2.jpg

Chris also posted an awesome pan shot of his beloved Concorde on TO but I couldn't find it. Another shot that probably took hours to set up.

This shot is very close to my heart. A forever gone airline and ship. I was fortunate enough to have traveled on a few of these back when they had overhead bins and window curtains. This is the magic of FS screenshots. It is possible to recreate inspiring images of days gone by. Granite was kind enough to email me an uncompressed file. It graces my desktop. Photo quality stuff.

There are so many more awesome shots in the screenshots threads. Check the number of views those threads have and you'll see that there's some interest.

Anyone else wish to post their favs and tell why you like them?

The 330 and 360 seem to fly very well. Always the bigger more popular types that get special treatment for design and panels etc. Not seen anything for the Shorts family. Would be good to get something along the lines of the currently available J41.

Thanks Kevin!

Barbados, dusk and pretty high settings. Weather was building storms IIRC. Also used some different shaders that were released on avsim recently. The shaders make the water much nicer, didn't notice anything else. The plane is PMDG's MD-11.

I'm hoping someone will put the cloud shadows back into FSX again. They were there early on, but weren't enabled in the release.

What's the MD-11 doing for you?

What are your system specs? Try a nice fresh clean install for starters - and maybe if you have FSUIPC, disable that temporarily in DLL.XML. Also try backup FSX.CFG and then delete it.

Also watch out for corrupted shaders. I think there is a command in FSX.CFG to rebuild the shader cache.

Whenever I select the MD-11 to go flying, I sit there and wait for it to appear and spin around in the "create a flight" screen. It never does - I get a fatal error and FSX restarts. FSX works beautifully with every other airplane.

I did. It was a clean install of FSX on the new laptop, and the MD-11 was the very first add-on I put on.

I didn't mess around with FSUIPC, I can try deleting the FSX.cfg, and I've never even heard of corrupted shaders!!!

Next suggestion I might have is the FSX folder.

Perhaps try installing FSX to something like FSX on the C: drive (I can't put the proper path in because forum rewrites it to be wrong) - and then make sure you have full permissions to the folder. Perhaps run FSX with Administrative privileges too. And lastly, do a re-install of the MD-11 with any updates they have available.

Wonder if it could also be something to do with Data Execution Prevention, that's been known to cause grief with some advanced Flight Simulator addons.

The shader issue sounds like a non-starter, from what you've described.

It sounds much more like a Windows 7 compatibility issue. If you look at the Windows Event Viewer for the crash, what does it say?

Quoting cpd (Reply 34):
Perhaps try installing FSX to something like FSX on the C: drive

I installed FSX in its own folder (heck - it's in its own F: drive). I've got nothing but the OS in the C: drive.

Quoting cpd (Reply 34):
and then make sure you have full permissions to the folder. Perhaps run FSX with Administrative privileges too.

Yep - did that.

Quoting cpd (Reply 34):
And lastly, do a re-install of the MD-11 with any updates they have available.

That's my next step...I did install the latest update from PMDG when I installed it initially.

Ouagadougou

I never fly to anywhere that I can't pronounce. I'd love to hear you calling for Ouagadougou Tower!

Put on the ruby red slippers, tap your heels together and say....
"There's no place like Lome. There's no place like Lome. There's no place like Lome."

I don't know if this picture is good enough to be considered "art", but I really like it - I mean, it's a [email protected]$$ C-130, what's not to like?

Yeah? Well i'm sayin' that it is! Love the Herc! When Lockheed was @ KONT, they used to mod and test fly them there. Man, I had no idea how maneuverable those crates are. They would do touch and go's that were almost aerobatic. The wings would be near vertical in some turns. I'll bet it's a blast to fly. I'd be too tempted to set "unlimited fuel" then hit "ctrl-E" and terrorize the suburbs!
BTW, what's the V1 or V2 speed of that thing unloaded with min fuel?

Quoting UltimateDelta (Reply 17):
Taking an Edge 540 for a spin (and a roll and a loop)

Ya know, I forgot to mention what a great shot that is. Wonder if The Batman could do that with the Herc.!

Aw, Chris. You know The Batman is having a fit with his. Let's not mention anything about PMDG's MD-11 until The Batman gets his flying.

HA HA!!! I'm not having a fit anymore!!

A little consideration for our MD-11 challenged members here.

The challenge was the FSUIPC. I went and installed v.4.60 and voilà!!!!

I knew I didn't have all of these corrupted files, and I had a strong feeling that I didn't need to uninstall/reinstall...anyway, just glad it's working.

Awright!!! Wow! Look at that cockpit shot. Is it as functional as the Capt. Sim 727?

Oh yeah - this is about as good as it gets. I can't imagine what PMDG's 777 will be like...

They look pretty good to me. As long as there's no ash in there!

UltimateDelta has some 3-D lights that cut through the fog real good but you have to wear special glasses.

Hi all

Been quiet of late due to my PC graphics card packing in

Purchased a new GTX260 so hoping to get back into FSX with some screenshots. Now with the faster card I seem to be able to apply 'bloom'
