Good FS Gaming PC?

Tue Aug 09, 2011 5:47 am

Hello,

I am looking into buying a gaming PC for flight sim. Here is what I want to run:

FSX
PMDG Add-ons
WIlco Add-ons
Aerosoft scenery
Traffic Add-on
Other scenery, environments, etc.

I want to run all of these, and fsx, at high settings with good fps and graphics. None of that lagging business.

I found this PC which is cheap (student budget) and seems to have good specs:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220070

Can anyone say if this is a good pc for what I want to do? I am aiming to keep the price in this range (there is room to go up). Any recommendations on other products would be greatly appreciated.

I also found some others that are more "mainstream" but would none the less like opinion if you foks have the time to look through all of these specs.

Ignore the Best Buy prices, I have a connection.

Cheers,

FSX ( with or without addons ) does by far not scale with the number of cores, inded only the second helps a bit, but needs single core speed. So a Phenom X6 (2.7 GHz) is no solution, take any I7, or a fast I5>3.3 Ghz + Turbo boost. Like i5-670, or I5-2500K
The Radeon 5430 is no 3d card, it is entry level 2d video, not more. Will be terrible performance...

Take ATI 5770 Minimum, 5870 recommended.

Since you are budget limited, from the same supplier http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229266 is entry level, http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229268 looks sufficient, also http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227321

This one seemed like the best value but you want a higher speed processor. i-7 920 or better IMO a fast i5 could do fine too.

Also yea your going to want the best video card you can find. I would take a look at Ibuypower.com I got a machine for
less then the one above which had an i-7 930 ATI 5870, water cool system, 6GB DDR3. They have some sales there every now and then. My processor speed isnt too great with the i-7 at 2.8ghz and I can tell in high ai traffic areas when my FPS is not where I would like but I also have a lot of AI traffic. But for the most part lets say in the PMDG 744 I will get 30fps at most airports in the vc. At places like JFK or LHR it will drop to 15ish. Which is still fine. So with that said I reccomend a fast processor and good video card are of course the most imporant. Something with 12gb DDR ram is a bit of an overkill and same with storage space of 2TB. Rather use the money and resources in processor speed and video cards.

Build your own. I did and I came out cheaper and with an overall better computer for everything else I use it for. Use the specs. of the guys that build computers specifically for FS and mimic those.

Not necessarily. Sometimes single parts cost more, sometimes less, last time I found a fitting system ready assembled for 200€ less than just the parts. I agree the big brands ( ACER, HP, Dell,... are unlikely to have anything useable )

Thanks for the advice. I am still waiting on the prices but I will be sure to get a price on the machine you mentioned. I am not against putting a bit more money into it to upgrade it (video card, other components) as I will be probably be getting the computer at 50% off.

I know that this is the general recommendation, but I am not very computer savvy. I know the basics, and can understand some basic stuff, but by no means am capable of building.

I disagree. While mainline computers aren't built specifically for the task, I think they can handle them. I ran FS9 with a wide range of add-on aircraft, scenery, and traffic in a 3 year old Dell (with an upgraded video card) and got about 20 fps. I know FSX is more intense but these computers are much better then their counterparts several years ago.

I was the exact same way. The parts are pretty much plug and play as I found out, I had a friend guide me through it all that had experience building computers. Honestly, I can say with conviction that you and I probably were at the same knowledge level prior to me putting together my pc.

Could you send me the specs you used to build your pc?

Yea, I gotta look it all back up- like I said I'm not that well versed in pc hardware I had a 'coach' if you will. In the meantime checkout www.jetlinesystems.com I used their specs to model my pc. If you want to drop the extra $ you can buy one of their pc's too. I built mine just about to their top level specs for a few hundred less.

Thanks for that site. I will use it as a reference if I end up building a system. I appreciate if you get to sending me the specs from your particular pc, so I can check the costs of the parts locally.

Looks like capable ( with exception of the GPU, the 4850 is not said to be ideal for FSX ). Go for any I7 and the ATI5870 and you are on the safe side...

I have the i7, overclocked to 4GHZ. FSX is mainly a CPU whore, although a good graphics card is necessary. The three things I would recommend. i7OC, Lots of memory, and a descent video card. Over time, continue to add to it. But like you said you are on a student budget. I added on mine over time, and have invested a heap into it. But all in all, I can run sliders to the right with the NGX, or any payware aircraft and never dip below 30 frames. It all depends on how you want to do it. Those three things are VERY important. Let me know if you need any help or questions, I'd be happy to oblige.
