Sounds like DL used to move them all around the system. I know I flew them JFK-PDX around 2000. I believe it continued on to NRT or elsewhere in Japan.

My first was 1997

CityBird JFK-BRU-JFK for an amazing $200 roundtrip across the pond! It may have been EWR, but I was young and it was a long time ago.

I think they served LAX, MIA, MCO and OAK as well.

Watching a lightly fuelled MD-11 climb out from YYZ to JFK was quite the sight.

Same with the Varig MD11 going from LHR to CPH and the DC10 before that.
Also miss the VIASA DC10 at LHR that always use to rotate early when it flew the LHR-ORY-CCS routing.

A lot have already been covered, KLM also at least done AMS-LAX KL603/604, AMS-DXB KL429/430,
and AMS-AUA KL733/734
again if your looking for something shorter Delta for a while done ATL-JFK DL1981/1992 and several ATL-MCO rotations.
The JFK-ATL was a/c off inbound CDG flight I think, same for the return went onto CDG.
TAM had GRU-MXP, GRU-CDG services with their 3
Alitalia had a good network from MXP to JFK/DXB/HKG among others
Air Namibia Windhoek-FRA/LGW

I had DAR-AMS, AMS-SXM and CUR-AMS on KL, FCO-ATL on DL.

The B-class on these planes was phenomenal (Y not so much), with strong take-offs and near silence in the cabin

Sat Feb 27, 2016 2:49 am

In 1992, coming back to the Philippines from the West Coast of the USA, I went out of the way just to ride the then new Swissair MD-11. I flew from Los Angeles to Zurich (with a stopover in Geneva), and after one night in Zurich, flew to Manila via Bombay (that leg was on the 747-300).

In the mid- to late-1990's, Philippine Airlines leased some MD-11's from World Airways, as another poster has said. They also flew that plane to Newark from Manila via Vancouver, I believe.

So, in summary:
LAX-GVA-ZRH
MNL-YVR-EWR

My long haul intercontinental flight was on a MD11: EZE-GRU-MIA (Feb 1997) VASP
Return was nonstop JFK-EZE, AA, I'd say B767 but could have been as well A300 (someone remembers this? JFK-EZE MAR1997)

In October 1996 schedules (closest I can find) JFK-EZE was a 767-300ER, 3 x week. AA's A300s didn't have the range for routes that long.

My first MD-11 flight was AA DFW-SJC (when the a/c continued on to NRT). I was booked on a later flight but was allowed on the earlier, got to sit in first since my row number on the original flight was 8 or 9. It was nice. Only other time was when a friend who worked for DL wanted to fly it before retirement. We non-rev'd BNA-CVG-LGA, bus to JFK, then JFK-ATL on the MD. It was like a few weeks before they parked them.

I don't see a date mentioned in the reply you refer to, but LX continued operating the MD-11 to BOS off and on for several years after the demise of Swissair. Second photo still in basic Swissair livery with the new name.

Wouldn't have been an AA MD-11 in the 80s as DL was the first American carrier to operate them (first scheduled DL service, Feb 5, 1991.

Almost sounds like one of WA's DC-10-30s, before the merger with DL.

AKL saw MD11s from
BR TPE-BNE-AKL, TPE-AKL around 1992/95 then various CNY charters
KE SEL-AKL, SEL-AKL-CHC, 1994/99
GA DPS-BNE-AKL 1996/98 leased I think
CI TPE-SYD-AKL 2000/01
TG BKK-BNE-AKL, BKK-AKL 2002/05. I have a feeling they were here briefly in 1994/95 on BKK-SYD-AKL-BKK vv

I think that covers scheduled pax ops not sure there were any other carriers.

Also at one stage (in October 2001 at least) TG had a triangle BKK-BNE-MEL-BKK and BKK-MEL-BNE-BKK on different days of the week.

Their late evening SYD-BKK flight used to go via MEL some days (again early 2000s) and the scheduled equipment for this was always changing - but for a number of scheduled periods it was a MD11 (the BKK-SYD sector was my only MD11 flight - I think that it must have been January 2002).

AA flew it also on JFK-DFW. Here is a great video of that flight on youtube, where they get upgraded to J on the JFK-DFW leg during the last minute of the video. That was when AA had the nicest J class and they called their widebodies LuxuryLiners.

Looks like the ended that branding around 2003/2004, probably because by then there must much "Luxury" left in air travel, especially in Y class. They probably didn't want to be accused of false advertising.

This September 2000 AA press release refers to the start of service to Taipei and Paris effective April 1, 2001.
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-relea...nd-taipei-on-april-1-73434542.html

The press release refers to the 772 being used to TPE and the 763 to CDG. AA disposed of the MD-11s not long after those routes started. The last A.net photos are dated 2001.

TPE and CDG didn't last long, not even a year. They were dropped soon after 9/11. NRT was dropped in October 2006 according to the Wikipedia article on SJC airport.

I am exactly the same with my FS and I just finished doing a month of cargo flights using FedEx DC-10s. both the MD-11/DC-10 were 2 of my favourite aircraft flying and we just dont see them in Melbourne
anymore, they still go to Sydney with UPS and FedEx. Melbourne use to get TG's MD-11s all the time from both BKK and Phuket, In fact Thai served most of Australia with their MD-11s while SYD got both 744s and MD-11s.
Once the MD went from Thai's fleet they sent the A340 for a while then now its a 777, just no the same as those beautiful 3 holers.
GA use to send in the MD-11s in the early to mid 90's and at one stage in 1990 I think EVA use to use a MD-11 before they stopped flying to Melbourne.
A beautiful aircraft.

LuxuryLiner and LuxuryJet date back to the 1970s, if not earlier. Previously their jets were called Astrojets and/or Astroliners. The MD11 though came during the LuxuryLiner era which extended into the late 90s/early 00s. (I think the 777 was delivered without the LuxuryLiner markings). AA did not introduce J until the 1980s.
