MD-11 Pax Routes Question

Fri Feb 26, 2016 6:20 am

Note: Mods, please feel free to move this to another forum if you feel it belongs there.

So I started flying the MD-11 on FSX. I'm not going to post specific questions about flying the aircraft here except for this.

What are some passenger routes the MD-11 would have flown on?

Before you tell me something like "It's a game, fly it wherever you want...," I try to play/use FSX as realistically as I can, down to weather conditions and all. I know that KLM used it from AMS-North America. Might it have been used on routes like say PHL-MCO (like the L1011), or the brief time LY used it, JFK-TLV?

Cargo flights...I can grab those off of FR24.

Also...if anyone reading this is/was an MD-11 crew member, I'd love to talk to you.

Thanks in advance,

Marc

In February 1997 I flew on MH from JNB to KUL on an MD-11. I believe it was leased from World, but it was painted in the full MH livery.

EDIT: The flight had started in EZE and was routed EZE - CPT - JNB - KUL. The aircraft went tech in JNB and we were delayed 31 hours.

1. Look up airline users and where their hubs are/were
2. Look through the DB for pictures of that airline's MD-11s at other airports
3. Fly from the hubs to those airports.

There are others, but I have slept since then, so forgot.

Thai flew them on the BKK-BNE-AKL route (my only MD-11 flight was AKL-BNE). I'm pretty sure they also flew on BKK-SYD (but I don't believe on the BKK-SYD-AKL, certainly not post 2001).

You may add PDX-CVG as the tag off of NGO-PDX, a very civilized way of heading east via a small hub with very easy connections. I used to fly to ORD to see the in-laws & take the DL M11 to CVG, then a 757 from CVG to ORD.

Three more, both from own experience in the mid to late nineties:

KL AMS-CCS-BON vv
MP AMS-HER vv

I always assumed the Martinair MD-11 deployment to HER wasn't structural and destinations in the Caribbean were more regular destinations. Back in the nineties there were a couple more holiday and charter airlines operating MD-11's to various resort destinations within Europe and further afield. Think Citybird, LTU, Monarch. I'm sure someone else can elaborate..

I believe it was leased from World Airways with PR flight attendants and WO cockpit crew.

VARIG used to fly them domestically also, bouncing from city to city, a few times I flew from GRU to Manaus RT. Beat the hell out of an RG 737, or worse TAM.

Now that I mention it, TAM had a handful of MD-11's, which may have come from VASP, then inherited some from the failing VARIG (RIP). VASP used them from GRU to EWR, I don't know where else. Pluna of Uruguay had 2 I believe that went back and forth from Montevideo and Madrid if memory serves!

If you can imagine a destination the MD-11 would fit into, chances are World did it. From vacation charters to US Government to foreign government, they did it all, and put good use to the phrase "been there, done that, got the t-shirt"

The only route I remember flying on an MD-11 was LT DUS-MIA-SJO (that flight in 97 ended in ADZ). LT also flew DUS-FAO, as well as flights to LAX (on the TriStar 500 and then MD-11). Their MD-11s were later sold to SR, as they were replaced with the A330.

Most of the routes at AA, I may be missing some-

DFW-ORY
DFW-LGW
DFW-NRT
DFW-MAD
DFW-FRA
DFW-KIX
DFW-MIA
JFK-ORY
JFK-LHR
JFK-SDQ
ORD-LHR
ORD-NRT
MIA-LHR
MIA-MAD
MIA-EZE
SJC-NRT
SEA-NRT

Some routes were only operated by the MD-11 for a few months and would switch back to the 763 or DC-10-30. AA wasn't too happy with the performance of the plane, we used to joke that they were going to paint them blue to match the ground equipment. Nicknames for the MD-11 were "The Scud," because you never knew where it would land, and my personal favorite, the MD-Lemon!

If your looking for a shorter MD-11 Route to fly in FSX:

VASP MD11 - YYZ to JFK - aircraft went on to GRU
Also recall a brief period of flights from YYZ to SSA then onto GRU (1X week) Not sure if the SSA flights also vent via JFK.

Watching a lightly fuelled MD-11 climb out from YYZ to JFK was quite the sight.
Similar to the Swiss MD-11 flying YYZ to YUL before going to ZRH. (There's another short route)

I've flown JFK-MIA-JFK on AA MD-11 in September 1995. I believe that the flight JFK-MIA was the flight AA99.

I flew non-rev on a DL MD-11 from ATH-ATL, non-stop, late 90s. Also PDX-LAX, about the same time frame.

Correct. Summer 1999, DL flew both ATL-ATH and ATL-IST on the M11. ATH returned for one more summer, but IST did not return.

Just before I turned into an aviation enthusiast, I flew on Finnair's MD-11 SIN-BKK for a school trip, back in the days when they operated HEL-BKK-SIN. I was wondering why we were flying a european carrier on a SEA route....
