Lens to complement my Canon 70-200 f4

Tue Jul 19, 2016 6:10 am

Hey everybody,

Last week my trusted 18-55 died and now I have "space" to replace that lens, but to also bridge the gap from 55 to 70. With the lense died, my current set-up is:

Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6
Canon EF 50mm f1.8
Canon EF 70-200mm f4L

As a body I use the Canon EOS600D.

I'm not only photographing planes, and the dead of the kitlens made me think to replace it with a lens with a little more zoom than the 18-55, like 18-100, or something. So, what would you do? Any recommendations?

Thanks for the input!

Cheers!

24-105 f4L IS is probably the best option right now for you. Unless you want something like a 2.8 aperture which would limit you to the 24-70. You seem to be shooting on a crop so that 24 might not be wide enough but you do have a super wide angle lens already. In theory your drop off is 18-36ish with any of the options I mentioned.

a 'plus one' for the 24-105 f/4 L. Canon has recently released a non-L version too, although I believe it's a very similar price to its pro sibling. It's supposedly very good optically but of course won't have the same build quality.

Not exactly for the non L version. The non IS is a variable 3.5-5.6 while the L is a fixed f4. The non L is listed at Canon for $600 (US) while the L is listed for $1,000 (US). As for reviews, I never really heard anything about the non L version being that great optically.

Hi,
Two options you may have: 1, to fill up the focal length from 10mm to 200mm. Lens like Sigma 17-50mm DC (only for APS-C bodies) or a 24-105 F4L works. 2, to extend the focal length. The Canon 100-400mm II L may be a good choice. Or the Sigma 150-600 Sports version.
Cheers :)

The 24-105mm might leave an awkward gap between 18mm and 24mm. I have the 24-70 f/4L on my Canon 70D and I find that there's a noticeable difference between 18mm and 24mm, as often times 24mm just isn't isn't nearly wide enough especially when I'm in a tight space. I would say go for the EF-S 18-135mm (either STM or USM); both of them are great lenses and cover a very useful focal range for general photography and short-distance planespotting. However if you're planning on moving into full-frame, then the 24-105mm might be a good investment. Keep in mind that there's going to be a 24-105 Mark II coming out in September.

I use the 24-105 f/4 L, and ended up buying the recently-released 16-35 f/4 L to complement it, as I have little confidence in the reliability of cheap kit lenses. I use a four-lens setup (16-35, 24-105, 70-200 and 100-400) because I'm not a great believer in these 'jack of all trades' lenses - anything single product going from ultra-wide to long telephoto simply isn't going to be as good as an ultra-wide to wide, plus a wide to medium telephoto, plus a medium telephoto to long telephoto.
