gopro photography/videography for aircraft

Fri Aug 26, 2016 2:20 am

I recently purchased a gopro hero 4 with the intent of using it attached to the side of an aircraft at my flight school (cessna 172). What mounts would be best to attach a gopro to the exterior of the aircraft? I'm debating between a suction cup or a strut mount. Any suggestions?

I have just used a suction cup on a Turbo Otter float plane. It worked perfectly.

I would suggest an adhesive mount when possible. If the flight school allows a GoPro on the outside of the aircraft, perhaps they will allow you to place a semi-permanent adhesive mount as well. Worth a try at least.

Did you use the mount that gopro makes or a third party mount?

Would like to hear your feedback on whatever mount you use.

We're working on a new mount - pursuing an STC for a strut mount. We have two other STC's for camera mounts on Cessna/Cirrus.

Here's what it looks like on a strut (172)... The strut clamp is already a PMA'd part. We start flight tests in a week.

How much are those mounts going to cost?

We do not have a price point at the moment due to the FAA's feedback on design changes (received today 9/1/16).

Our goal is to keep it under $500.00 and have our STC cover multiple installations on one aircraft (e.g. one right strut, one left strut).

Feedback appreciated.

I'm curious about the use of suction mounts with regards to changes in altitude, i.e thinner air and lower temperatures at higher altitudes, can this affect the quality of the seal and it's ability to remain attached to the aircraft.

I would have thought hard mounts would be an absolute must to guarantee the Gopro remains attached to the Aircraft at all speeds, altitudes and environmental changes, without threatening the aircraft superstructure or people on the ground.
