How do you guys find an aircraft's manufacturer serial/construction number?

Mon Jan 07, 2019 7:41 pm

Do the manufacturers really make them known to the public? I can't think of any other way to find an aircraft's construction number unless you're able to walk right up to it and look at the data plate bolted on to the airframe.

This relatively new F-35 for example has a construction number listed as AF-116, and this F/A-18C Hornet is apparently 1448/C464. How do you guys figure this out?! It seems to be common knowledge because nearly every military aircraft photo on here has a construction number tied to it, but I can't for the life of me figure out how you guys have access to this information.

There are a few good online databases that you can use. The Scramble database https://www.scramble.nl/data has most everything you need. Searching for that F-35 (going to the Military, then USAF section) and plugging in the serial number, it returns:
Serial 15-5125
Code LF
Type F-35A-3I
CN AF-116
Unit 63rd FS
Status Active

For US military, http://joebaugher.com/ also has a comprehensive list.
For US registered civilian aircraft, the FAA Database is also very helpful: https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquir ... quiry.aspx
Airfleets.net is also a good source of civilian aircraft, especially airliners.

Thank you, that sheds some light on it.

Where do the third party websites such as scramble.nl and joebaugher.com get their manufacturer construction numbers from? I'm trying to figure out what the source is. Are there press releases? Or perhaps the manufacturers were contacted?
