hello guys i have a lot of photos which are not in the best light and are suffering from contrast issues. i firstly thought i would just bump up the contrast but someone said that wouldn't work so i'm seeing if there is anything i can do about it? or is it not fixable

i try my best to shoot in good light, unfortunately i'm not always able too. due to things i have to do in the week so i only have the weekends for taking some shots so chances of getting a nice day is drastically reduced . also i would like to ask if there is a way to know if you have to little contrast, sometimes i can see if there is or not but not always

Typically, contrast is balanced when pure whites look like pure white and pure black like pure blacks, but in the real world it isn't so clear cut. Perhaps the best guide is to look at the aircraft tyres — if they're in the shadow of part of the aircraft (normally a wing) then they should look almost pure black, without actually being true black. However if it's close to sunrise/sunset and the tyres are exposed to any real light then they should take on a more grey appearance as to have them black would typically indicate too much contrast.

Other than that it's really about experience and knowing what to look for... as well as under what sort of light you actually edit your images. The amount of times I've edited during daylight hours, only to find that the contrast on screen looks insufficient when the room's dark.
