Nikon AF-S FX TC-14E III with Nikkor 200-500mm lens

Fri Sep 06, 2019 2:48 am

I am considering getting the Nikon AF-S FX TC-14E III teleconverter to use with my primary spotting lens, the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR (with D850 body). I am aware that I will lose 1 stop of exposure, but I wanted to get feedback on how this fares for aviation photography otherwise.

A 5.6 lens with a TC will probably have some AF problems.

I own this lens, and I don’t think you need the TC. As mentioned above, I would not recommend it due to AF issues. Furthermore, the lens is probably high enough quality in most situations to allow you to just crop a bit more, if you really need it. Keep in mind if you’re on a DX (crop body) focal length is x1.5. I can’t think of an aviation related situation to where you’d need 1050mm effective focal length.

I use this lens frequently for my aviation photography and agree with the comments above. The only circumstances requiring a higher magnification if one were photographing aircraft at cruising altitude from the ground. The lens is an exceptional one IMO.

What AF issues? If you're using that lens with a TC1.4, then your camera has to support f/8 autofocus, which should be OK on the D850. BTW, the D850 is an FX camera, so lens focal length is what it is.

But only with 9 out of 153 AF focus points working.

That’s correct, I neglected to see the 850 and assumed he was on a DX body for some reason. I’m not sure it makes sense to take the aperture hit to f/8 and lose focus points as seahawk mentioned. It just seems a bit overkill to need that much zoom unless it’s a distant airshow situation or something similar.

I was thinking of getting it to enhance my ability to take close-up shots, but I realized if I am already in a situation where I can get close-up shots, a TC with this lens won't make that much more difference than walking a little bit closer, and the feedback in this thread finalized my decision to not get the TC for use with this lens for aviation photography.
