Advice for blur on photographs!

Sat Jul 04, 2020 2:46 pm

Hi everyone!
Recently I've noticed that I've been getting some blur on my photographs, and I'd like some advice on how I could prevent this? Im not overly experienced in photography, but I do know the basics. I have a Canon EOS80D and am using EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II. Here are some examples of what I mean:

If you look at the nose and tail, you can see what I mean. Taken at 1/250 sec,154mm, f/5.6, and ISO 100.

Again, the tail/reg is blurred. 1/400 sec, 131mm, f/7.1 and ISO 100.

The nose in this one:

1/500 sec, 156mm, f/8, and ISO 100.

1/400 sec, f/7.1, 146mm, and ISO 100.

Perhaps most noticeable is this one:

1/400sec, f/7.1 245mm and ISO 100.

I'd be happy to upload more (there are quite a few), if necessary. I've only started to see this over the last few months, and I don't *think* my hand steadiness is an issue (it has never been before). My lens is 7 years old - is it worth upgrading? I was looking at Canons 70-300mm option earlier (https://store.canon.co.uk/canon-ef-70-300mm-f-4-5-6-is-ii-usm-lens/0571C005/).

Am I doing something wrong with the shutter speed, ISO, aperture, or all three? Or is the autofocus just old and wearing down (the camera has been used a lot)?

Thank you guys so much in advance,
Harrison

The easiest thing to do is to start with the basics. I would take your rig and take some pictures of static subjects at different focal lengths and go from there.

I would also check things like your focus point(s) and what your AF is set to. If you have another lens and or body you can swap things around and see if the issue persists.

Thank you for your reply - I do have another lens and body so I will try that out. I'll also try out some static things...
