Any film shooters?

Yes, to some of you this may sound nuts but i quit digital in 2017 and went back to shooting film, i just recently started again on aviation photography after losing interest in around 2010 ( my last pics i took were of the first time in October 2010 when a Lufthansa A380 visited PMI.

Main tool is a Minolta X-700, Motor Drive, and a Tamron 80-210mm F4 ( MF ofcourse ), mainly with Fuji Provia 100F, Ektachrome 100, and Velvia 50 for really bright sunny days for ramp shots.

I am based at PMI / LEPA, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, i haven't gotten round to scanning my slides yet but i will soon.

I have to say i don't miss digital, slide film gives me what i want with no editing involved at all.

Oh, and projecting my slides, is a billion times more satisfying than looking at a screen, and you won't convince me that it isn't.

I enjoy the way film makes me work, carefully making every frame count, and the anticipation of getting my film back from the lab to see what i got.

I still shoot slide film. Usually a mix of Ektachrome 100 and Provia 100F, on my Nikon F5. I have a few images I’ve edited for upload here, but haven’t done so yet.

Cool, nice to see the film resurgence has also extended somewhat into the aviation community.

How do you go getting film developed? Around here there used to be plenty of shops to do that, now they have all vanished.

There is a really good lab here in my town less than 2km from me, They do in-house B&W, C-41 and E-6 processing.

They opened 5 years ago and have had to hire people recently to aid with processing as they barely could keep up with the amount of film getting sent or dropped off at them, i've become good friends with the owner and he tells me demand just keeps going up.

They even offer different scanning option from a basic Epson V700, Nikon LS-5000 which gives me around 21Mp from 35mm slides, or even Drum scanning, but the drum scans are 6 bucks a pop! although the quality is insane.

$6 a scan for a true drum scan is insanely cheap. I’ve got a friend who does mine on a Heidelberg Tango and he charges me $25 each (normal price $35 each).

I do mine at 6000dpi which results in a file size of about 600mb. Each.

I still have some film cameras: Nikon FE, Nikon F80, Fuji GS645, Fuji Klasse, Mamiya RB67. And I only shoot B&W film because it's easy and convenient to develop & scan them at home.

I like to shoot on film too.
I think it has a really special aesthetic you can't create with digital cameras.

I agree completely, you can mimic it, or try, but there is nothing like the real deal for me personally.

Thing with slides also is that every slide is a unique piece. It was there at the moment of the action. This isn't the case for paper photo's and definitely not a digital image.
Also you have to get it right the moment you push the button. No second chances. And you literally pay for your mistakes.
It adds a collecting-aspect to the hobby. Excanging slides, sending parcels with slides all over the world. A charm that'll never be achieved with digital photography.

I quit the spotting (and slide photography) around 2003 and I always blame the demise of Sabena, the end of Concorde and digital photography for that. (but really it was just other priorities in life)

I agree, there is nothing like holding an actual physical photograph, it's the real deal, reality frozen in time, so to speak.

And as you say, film makes you consider your shots more carefully, especially nowadays, since you know every frame costs you money.
Overall i think that switching to film has made me a better, more selective photographer.
It makes you think before you press the shutter button, is this shot worth it or not?

Yeah you're right. On film there's just this haptic touch to it that makes it so much more personal. Furthermore becoming more selective with your shots is so valuable because I recognized recently, that I treat my pictures as more of a waste product. The ability to develop cheap pictures and take as many shots as you want takes away the value of each individual picture. The benefits are other things such as the possibility of getting solid work from almost every session, even as beginner.
