NIKON AF-S 200-500MM F5.6E ED VR + D7500 for Plane Spotting Photogrpahy

Mon Apr 19, 2021 12:39 pm

Hi,

First time poster long time lurker. I registered specifically to discuss this lens + body setup for plane spotting photography. I did look in the members photo section and searched for others using this lens. I didn't come up with too much. I do have a couple questions so im hoping someone out there is using this lens.

Is anybody this lens for plane spotting? Do you have a link to some photos where this lens is in use? In my price range Im thinking this is the best bang for buck. I will be shooting mainly at YYZ. Im looking to buy new. Is there anything I should look out for with this combination of lens and body? I would love to see some more airplane photos shot with this lens!

I know it maybe a little overkill for a first time lens and body for Airplane photography but I dont want to have to upgrade too soon and will most likely be using it occasionally for other activities. Any advice would be great.

Thanks and Regards

I have used this lens almost exclusively on a D800 body for the past 4 years and can't say enough good things about it. It is reasonably priced and IQ is excellent even at 500 mm. It's been quite durable after this much use and also having carted it around to various spotting locations.
I have provided a link below to photos taken with this lens. All the images taken at KCVG are with this lens. You can check out the EXIF data for focal lengths.

I expect it will perform well with the D7500. Although with the 1.5X crop factor, it might be too much zoom at the short end.

Thanks for the reply. I just took a look and wow. Some very nice very sharp looking images. I dont think the long focal length + crop factor will be much of an issue most of the time. This is just a guess at this point because at YYZ there are going to be more often than not times where the focal length will come in handy. I think I should also look into a smaller nikon lens for the fly over landings that get quite close. Maybe something in the range of 70 - 200 or even smaller. Looks like I am on the right track with this combination. Thanks for sharing. Bookmarked :)
