Shooting from an airplane window

Wed May 19, 2021 12:49 pm

I always have a problem when I shoot from an airplane window ( regular passenger aircraft ( 737s, 320s, 777s, 330s).

I can never get sharp photos and they are always soft and borderline blurry. I don't know whether it is because of the multilayer structure of the airplane window or my shooting settings.

So far I have identified few factors that helped me to take better photos,

- I try to sit opposite of the sun and avoid sun glare on the window
- I bring wipes to clean the interior part of the window
- I pray the outer part of the window is clean as welll ( usually it isn't)
- I shoot at higher shutter speeds ( above 1/1000 usually 1/1600)
- I shoot at smaller aperture settings ( largest is f8 )

These helped me to improve my photos but still at perfect conditions such as good weather, good clean window and ideal shooting settings I can not get sharp photos. I would really appreciate if you can give some tips about this subject.

What exactly are you trying to shoot from an airplane window? Another airplane that is flying miles away or the wing of your a/c? All the factors you listed are important points but I would like to add one more: the less mm you are using, the sharper the results.

General stuff I usually try to shoot from plane windows are

- planes at ground level during taxiing
- overall views of airports from above

non-aviation related

- buildings on the ground in the vicinity of the airport

I usually use 70-200 mm that would give me a good range, I sometimes use 24-105 but then I have to crop a lot which degrades image quality.

For air to air shoots ( that are quite distant), I tried to use my Sigma 150-500 but I had always blurry photos so I quit using that. For air to air shoots I assume best place to shoot is from the cockpit windows as it is cleaner or sharper glass?
