What do you think? Could this be photoshopped? The aircraft are very close to each other, and one of them should look fairly smaller when flown at "normal" separation. Maybe they really flew as tight as some fighter jets at airshows. If so I have my doubts that this would have been approved in western european countries or in the US for safety reasons!

Could be, but it could also be some kind of demonstration/formation flight, it's not like that hasn't happened in western European countries.

Also remember that a long lens can give the impression of objects being closer than they are.

The photo was shot at Ramenskoye, July 19th. That makes it part of the MAKS airshow and trade fair. The Russian equivalent to Farnborough or Le Bourget.

So the photo is legit.

It’s most likely an airshow as said above and a visual trick.


Remember when the Qantas and Emirates A380s did their formation flight over Sydney harbour it was rather the same.

They did the whole flight on autopilot. And people used long lenses and clever angles to make them look very close together.
