Superbowl Planespotting this week in LA Area

Wed Feb 09, 2022 5:56 pm

Hi all - Am wondering if anyone has any insights for planespotting in the LA area in the days leading up to & after the Superbowl. In particular, which airports are expected to handle the increased private jet load.

Hawthorne is very close to SoFi, but am curious about their ramp space. Same for LAX. Santa Monica definitely has available room. Not sure if Torrance accepts jets.

Thank you!

Here is the FAA's special G/A flight requirements for LA Basin airports during the Super Bowl week:

https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/super-bowl ... -ga-pilots

This part is interesting:

"A reservation program to facilitate aircraft parking at the following Los Angeles-area airports will be in effect from Feb. 6 through Feb. 14. Pilots should contact the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) at their airport to obtain reservations and additional information.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Van Nuys Airport (VNY)
Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR)
Long Beach Airport (LGB)
Jack Northrup Field / Hawthorne Municipal Airport (HHR)
John Wayne Airport (SNA)
Ontario International Airport (ONT)
San Bernardino International Airport (SBD)"

And here's the link to the FAA's Safety Plan for Super Bowl LVI:

Pretty common for big events like Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby

With GA and business aviation up 32% YoY it’ll be busy there.

Going off of the experience of working a couple of Super Bowls in the past, I think Long Beach is going to be ground zero for the private jet invasion. It is the only place close by that has enough ramp space for the heavy jets, and they can easily close a couple of runways for parking. The visitors will head downtown for the parties, while the pilots stay at the cheaper places around LGB.

Signature and Atlantic at LAX don’t have a lot of ramp, and you can bet the parking fees are going to be OUT OF THIS WORLD… Even a Quick drop is likely in the thousands of dollars. Same for Burbank.

If you want to see the celebs arriving, my suggestion would be to hang out at Hawthorne Jet Center, it is probably going to be “Citation Central”. I imagine that both HHR and LGB will be really busy.

Best place to watch it is in the back going home on the internet. Unless hanging around in LA after the game.

Thanks for the link. I noticed that there is a 10 nautical mile radius flight restriction in place from 2:30pm to 8:30pm, with the exception of regular commercial and cargo service (LAX). So, it seems that Hawthorne, Santa Monica, Torrance are essentially closed for operation during those hours, no?

Forgot about LGB. I agree that would be the most attractive entry/ exit option for Superbowl air traffic.

Yes, but no one will be looking to move during those hours anyway.

If memory serves me, when the Super Bowl was in Atlanta the local FBO rented out the FedEx, UPS and DHL ramp areas to be able to park all of the GA aircraft.

Also, as an addendum to this thread, the flyby for the game will be an AF Heritage flight:

P-51 out of Chino
A-10 out of Tuscon
F-16 out of Shaw, SC
F-22 from Langley
F-35 from Hill, AFB

Thanks to tail blocking it is hard to gauge who exactly is coming and going, but BUR seems stuffed with traffic today just with unblocked aircraft: https://flightaware.com/live/airport/KBUR

Meanwhile, LGB is starting to pick up, too: https://flightaware.com/live/airport/KLGB

HHR will likely consist primarily of drop-n-gos due to the limited ramp space there. A contact at LAX indicated that LAWA expects a lot of additional GA and that additional space is being allotted temporarily. Looks like NetJets has established a temporary operation at the Signature FBO. Sounds like there will be a lot drop-n-go activity there. LGB has indicated they expect possibly having their busiest movement day ever on Monday 02/14.

On the whole, I'd expect LGB, VNY, and BUR to get increased activity, with TOA being an a possible outlier as well due to proximity. Only thing with TOA is that Jet-A isn't sold there. If TOA does receive a share of the traffic, any jet departures would possibly entail gas-n-go ops, dependent on destination.

Wow that is almost as many as for the Glasgow climate change summit. :)
Are there specific interesting aircraft coming to the Superbowl? Owners or teams? What special aircraft do they use?
The ultimate vehicle would be some private Osprey. You could land right inside the stadium and take the team with you. If the grass is high wind resistant.

LAWA email stated due to the limited ramp space at Signature & Atlantic, they will also park jets at “West Imperial Terminal Spot B”, “West Imperial Spot C”, “South Pad 4”, & “Singapore 1”

Email is just to state increased GA & corporate traffic coming into LAX for Super Bowl weekend. And for all LAX badge holders to be aware of increased flight traffic.

From AOPA on the insane Super Bowl fees:
I figured they would be a real head-ripper, but wow…

“ However, Elizabeth Mertinez, a front desk employee at Jet Center Los Angeles, told AOPA the fees set for the weekend are actually at least double that: “We do have a special event fee and it’s the slot reservation fee. It’s $3,000 for arrivals and $3,000 for departures,” said Mertinez. “That’s a $6,000 fee that needs to be made in order to reserve the slot.” Mertinez also explained that the nonrefundable $6,000 fee does not include facility fees, which range from $450 to $2,000 depending on aircraft type. And that is not to mention the overnight fees, which range from $100 for single-engine piston aircraft to $3,500 for regional jets.

If a $6,000 slot fee doesn’t suit your fancy, flying 8 nautical miles northwest to Santa Monica Municipal Airport will get you a somewhat more affordable rate from Atlantic Aviation: A staff member at Atlantic Aviation told AOPA that a minimum $1,500 service fee would apply, though it was unclear whether that was the only extra charge in effect. Communication difficulty during the phone conversation February 10 prevented follow-up questions.

Further north at Signature Flight Support at Long Beach (Daugherty Field), an employee told AOPA that nonrefundable slot times are available and reservations must be made in advance to receive service. The largest aircraft the FBO can accommodate is a Gulfstream 650, where the slot time fee is $4,700. Turboprop slot times are also available and will cost nearly $1,700.”

You can bet that LAX is easily double these prices, or more.

Jets already leaving Long Beach. I imagine these are the folks being helicoptered out of the stadium lot.

2 NetJets, one to Centennial, and another to LAS, and a NetJets Longitude to White Plains.
Plus a private CJ1 to Shreveport.

Look like the exodus has begun.

Operational issues with air traffic with LA Center today with the influx of PJ’s?

Observing FR24 looks like VNY but especially BUR having challenges getting flights out. Flights sitting on the taxiway for over an hour+ For departure of both General Av and Commercial. Still seeing planes on the taxiway that pushed almost an hour ago sitting idle, been a daylong issue. Most flights averaging 50 mins for takeoff. A few prolonged observances I saw

B68504 BUR-CVG 54mins on taxiway
B68502 BUR-CVG 4 hours on taxiway/returned to the gate for refuel
DL3736 BUR-SLC 66 mins on taxiway
WN522 BUR-DAL 64 mins on taxiway
