One of the commonest reasons for photo rejection I get is 'vignetting'. Does anyone have any tips on correcting this, for example, seen when a pale aircraft is shot against a blue sky and the sky outlining the plane is a shade darker than the rest of the sky?

Hello,
Usually you get vignetting - darkish corners on the images when using long zoom lens at their longest end, could be 300-400mm even at f8.(mostly with cheap lens)
You may use "lens correction" option in the Lightroom or any other photo editing software during editing your image. (if your lens profile exist in software you using)
Vignetting can be corrected automatically or manually but do not over-do it because it can cause a reverse vignetting when the corners become brighter than the centre of the image.
