100-400mm lens advice for Canon eos70D

Hi there, after a bit of break from aviation photography I am looking at buying a 100-400mm zoom to replace my trusty but very old Sigma 170-500 that now only works on my film cameras and so I am interested in people's experience of using 100-400mm lenses on a Canon body.

Unfortunately my budget will not stretch to Canon's 100-400mm L series :cry: so I am looking at either the Tamron 100-400mm F4.5-6.3 or Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3. In the past I have used Sigma and Canon lenses and I have been happy with the results. I am interested to hear what people's thoughts are with these two lenses particularly at the 300/400 end of the zoom.

Apart from night shots I have never used a tripod so the lack of a mount on the Sigma, or the optional collar on the Tamron is not an issue for me.
