Hello All

The priority screening guidelines are due an update for more transparent and better defined rules. The priority and HS teams have worked on an update which is outlined below. This topic is for members of the community to have their say and input. This will be left open for at least a week to ensure the community can have their input and the acceptance guide will then be updated.

We ask you to discuss in a positive and contributing manner.

The following subjects will be given priority screening and will qualify for a News Banner on the front page.

1: New type of aircraft, except ultralight and homebuilts.
2: New type of aircraft for airline - in full scheme, including sub types, ie 737-700, 737-800
3: First flight for above.
4: New cabin design.
5: New color scheme for airline including different types and subtypes (eg 737-700 737-900)
6: New special colors (IE retro jets, logo jets and colorful one offs) including subtypes as above
7: New type for an armed force
8: New colorful special for a military aircraft including tail only, even not highly visible or camo.
9: Accident or incident. Accident or incident must be visible in picture and does not include burst tyres, missing winglets and the like at screener discretion. A News Banner is at screener discretion. After the crash we will only accept images with the crash in them. We will not accept pictures of the aircraft in question taken before the crash.
10: Media events and first flight of demonstrator tour.

The following subjects will be given priority screening but do NOT qualify for a News Banner on the home page.

1: First flights for two in the preceding paragraph above.
2: New aircraft for the airline - in full scheme. New registration or manufacturer reusable registration. Museum, restored or permanent display aircraft will not qualify.
3: New type of aircraft for an airline - hybrid.
4: New registrations
5: New registration. New registration for an armed force, museum, restored or permanent display aircraft will not qualify.
6: First visits of newsworthy aircraft at screener discretion.
7: Major air shows Paris, Farnborough, Berlin, Dubai and MAKS only. Priority will only be given on show days.
8: Water cannon salutes for any of the above will receive priority.
9: Crops are acceptable at screener discretion.

The following subjects will NOT be given priority screening

1: New type of aircraft for an airline - untitled
2: First visit of common type/airline to an airport
3: New decals or stickers of any kind. Only new color schemes apply.
4: Diversions of aircraft from other airports due to weather.
5: Sporting charters, final flights of common aircraft, military movements at civil airfields, head of state movements such as Air Force One and talk of town

Priority screening is offered for 24 hours after the first image is accepted.
Only the first shots will be added to the News Banner to thank those who upload first.
All of the above rules are at screener discretion and subject to change.

This one stands out to me:

The following subjects will NOT be given priority screening
3: New decals or stickers of any kind. Only new color schemes apply.

That would seem to rule out priority screening for many new special liveries, correct? Even most of Emirates' specials use decals -- big ones at that, but nonetheless, they are still decal jobs. Then there are smaller decals like the following, but I would think the site would still benefit from having new specials like them up in a timely fashion:

Hi crew. In my opinion if the decal occupies half of the fuselage like the examples given, it could be considered new paint. It would have to be a size that justifies.

IMO, if the decal has enough significance that it makes the plane allowable for the Special category, then the priority-allowable "6: New special colors (IE retro jets, logo jets and colorful one offs) including subtypes as above" should seemingly supersede the not-priority "3: New decals or stickers of any kind. Only new color schemes apply." If it were my choice, I'd just leave off not-priority #3 as it causes more confusion than it clears up.

A few more examples of small decals that still make for "special colors":







The first shot(s) of those shouldn't have to wait 2 weeks, as people want to see brand new specials when they come out.

Will a Single Engine Prop (that would be new in DB) qualify for priority screening in case part of the aircraft is cropped off?

The team has discussed the points made in relation to stickers and decals and they would like them specifically mentioned and propose amending point 3 as follows;

No stickers or decals of any kind. Screener discretion will apply if the markings are for an airline's anniversary.

Please refer to the last line in the OP. For the other examples provided screener discretion may apply.

Thanks Paul. A little worried "screener discretion" will lead to more ambiguity and inconsistency than there was previously -- for instance, having a photo de-prioritized only to have a subsequent uploader have the same aircraft priority accepted later -- but I guess we'll see how it pans out.

The above update from last year will be replaced with the text in the OP to ensure we are conveying a consistent message to the community. I hope you can see we are doing this update in the most transparent way possible. The entire screening team has been involved plus this forum post.

It would be nice to see more community members participate for the best possible result. You're a long standing member showing a genuine concern for the entire community and you are welcome to touch base anytime if you feel we're getting something wrong ot not being consistent.

There used to be a lot of community participation in the Site Related forum to make this website better but since most, if not all ideas/suggestions/bug reports are being dismissed or simply ignored, I guess a large part of the community just gave up providing their input for any website improvements (including this guideline update).

Regarding the decals, some of these are only applied for short time frames to coincide with news worthy events - like a sticker for an airline taking a team to the World Cup or Olympics, or like the DHL pic posted above.

How much discretion do the screeners have regarding the news worthiness of stickers and that they may only be applied for a short time?

Secondly with regards to priority screening of air shows, while not every show can be added to the list, 2 major shows that have previously afaik qualified for priority screening are RIAT and Singapore. My understanding is Singapore is the Asian trade show equiavalent of a Dubai or Farnborough show, therefore it may make sense to add to the list.

Thank you for your feedback. The degree of discretion depends on the newsworthy nature of the shot and amount of photographer's uploading it. There are too many variables to list and as for RIAT and Singapore we would be happy to add if community wants.

The above text is now live in the acceptance and priority guides. Word for word the same so there can be no confusion and the guidelines are consistent, Thanks to all who participated and you can see the owners gave the community and team as much time as possible to participate and have a say.

Hi - regarding Airshow priority screening, why is priority screening only for show days? Surely the aircraft concerned is the reason for priority, not the date the image was taken. For example, star attraction arrives two days before the airshow opens, image spends two weeks in screening. Yet an image of the same aircraft at the same location taken two days later would be priority, doesn't make sense to me. What do you think? Thanks

It has always been defined as show days as long as we've had the acceptance guide. That said, new registrations and liveries arriving early for shows qualify for those reasons and there have been times when some arrivals from the major manufacturer's or military formations have been given screener discretion over the years.
