I have been involved with aviation photography for some years now as a hobby and have gained an exceptional level of skill in my own humble opinion. I was wondering if anyone had any direction on making any money with my hobby or turning completely pro. I have had some shots published in magazines such as Airways but that is just for peanuts a shot. Any info or direction would be greatly appreciated.

I"ve been shooting slides for 20yrs myself, however have never really put a lot of effort into trying to get them published. I've got 10,000-11,000 slides taken with top notch Nikon cameras and lenses, not to sound arrogant or anything. I think the key is to get as much of your work exposed, via a webpage, hobby magazine, local newspaper, etc...Its tough because there are more and more people into the airliner photography thing these days, everybodys in competion for getting their work published. I was at LAX taking shots recently and was talking with a bunch of other photographers from all over, and a few of them stated that they had contacted a couple of airliner/aviation magazines about getting some of their shots published and they said it had better be exoctic,rare,brand new livery,etc because they were getting about 1,000 slides a week in the mail and just dont have time to sort thru them all. I would look into other magazines like Time, Business Week, etc.. I would guess there is somebody out there looking for some airliner photos that nobody has considered yet. Just a few ideas, hope they help out a little.

I agree, I have been shooting for 3, almost four years now (not that long...I know...) but in that timeframe, I have shot over 3500 slides in about 1 year, with my Nikon cameras. (Not meaning to sound snobby either).
I have sold some images to companies with various products, such as metal cutting companies, American emailed me, and various other companies.
The key is to send your images to MANY places, this site, is an excellent place to start. Also, email companies, such as Airways, Airliners, AW & ST and so on. Usually, airlines don't take your offers, for the fact that there are photogs who do this as a profession. Daily, etc...Clay Lacy's a good example of that...
It's like fishing, eventually, someone will bite, and it's an incredible feeling when you see your image published in a mag, book, whatever...
