Man Made Pyramid At Munich

Hi all

My cousin just recently showed me a few shots taken at Munich Airport.

I noticed that there is a giant man made pyramid at the airport which is for spotters and photographers. This hill is huge.

Anyone on here been to that hill and have they any examples of the shots taken from there?

Thanks and regards

Hi Gary,

this hill isn't suitable for good photopragphs.
As you already mentioned, it is huge and therefore you are high above the aircraft. You are too far away to take good shots. As I can imagine right, a B757 needs more than 300mm and the apron lights are always in front of the planes.

There are more better places at MUC. Here are some examples:

Photos that I am sure were taken from that hill:

Generally, I got the impression most local photographers do not go there - it is similar to the visitor's terrace at Heathrow in that respect. But I rather liked it.

You get limited views. Very good overviews of one corner of the taxiways and some acceptable views of one runway (and good views of any plane going to or coming from that runway)

I second Ikarus' opinion.

I think the hill was simply built from fill that came out of the construction sites.
More interesting are the few historic aircraft at its entrance, including a Super Conny.

Here are some of my better shots from the hill:

On this shot you can see the hill in front of the engine:

Hi Gary!

Most spotters i know dislike the pyramid hill because it is quite far away from where the action is. You would need at least a 500mm lens to take decent pictures from that spot. There are many other places at Munich Airport (MUC) that are far better than the hill.

Here 2 examples of photos i took from some other much better place:

This is the Besucherpark, one stop out from the airport on the S-Bahn and, although difficult for photography, good for spotting and very popular with famillies. Just another example of continental airports regarding visitors as important, many UK airports please take note - especially GLA, EDI.

I was there about 4 years ago and it is a great spot. The even have a smal aviation giftshop that sells Herpa Wings and other aircraft items. Unfortunately, I only had a point and shoot camera with print film loaded in it when I was there, so I didn't get any good shots.

If you are going to be heading to Munich, I recommend checking it out. You can take the airport rail line one stop from the airport and you are there.

This little aviation giftshop is now known as Dimension M with a huge modern visitor center, 6 or 7 interactive movies, a flight-simulator, the historical planes (2, one of Lufthansa and one of Swissair), a big restaurant and of course the hill  Smile. I think the price for the center and a visitor-tour thru the airport by bus cots alround 20DM (8 $) or so.
