I have a Nikon N90 and I want to getting the Tokina 80-400mm lens. My question is if anyone has used the Tokina lens and the Nikon lens. Thanks

I agree with Ivica comments and also use Sensia 100ASA Slide Film
I found it necessary to use I/350 to compensate for the 5.6 aperture

Hi Stephen:
During several years I had been looking for a lens going beyond 300mm for my F70/F100 equipment: the idea was to get a lens that could be used in all the telephoto lens, without having to change continuously and preferably improving the optical quality of my Nikkor 75-300/Tamron 200-400.
A friend of mine let me make several shots with the Tokina and it wasn't bad, but worst than the 75-300. I wasn't convinced in buying the Nikon 80-400 due to to lack of AF-S, but all the tests said that it performed very well optically, also AirNikon and several users gave me very good references about it.
I bought the Nikkor 80-400VR last week and yesterday I had the first rolls developed. Believe me, it's worth the price: quality was very good at all focal lenghts and apertures, I even did several action shots at 400mm and they were extremely sharp
. Focusing was faster than with my older lenses 
.
If you are going to wait perhaps it would be better to save a bit of money in the meantime and go for it.

Thanks Toni. But first I need to get an F100 so that the VR mode will work right. I have been told it won't work on the N90-s.

But I would have bought it even if it hadn't VR. In fact I won't use VR unless it is strictily necessary.
Maybe you don't want to pay for something you aren't going to use. Well, perhaps in the future...

Most of the times I have enough light to shot at "conventional" shutter speeds (I mean 1/focal length or more), in these ocasions I prefer to trust in my "steady" hand.
I have read that when using VR you lose a bit of sharpness. I still haven't enough test pics to think so...
Ah! and when VR was on, the F100 drive seemed to slow down.
Anyway the "VR" tests that I did last Saturday seemed to work fine: and the panning effect was excellent!

After shooting with the 80-400 for over 6 months now, I have seen no evidence that the VR function causes loss of sharpness. My only gripe about the lens is that with the VR on, it tends to really eat your batteries power, especially on the D1H. So, I use the VR function maybe 50% of the time...But, even with bright sunlight, handholding the lens at 400mm without VR is a trick.
Other than that, the 80-400 is a fantastic lens. I told myself when I bought one that it would not replace my 80-200 2.8, well......

Stephen: there are three 80-200 2.8 Nikkor models, one of them is AF-S, and is probably one of the best telezooms ever produced. If 200mm is enough for you, then it's a good choice. It's more expensive than the 80-400VR, but the oldest models are cheaper.
