Planespotting Should NOT Feel Like A Crime.

Sat Feb 09, 2002 10:06 am

I've had it.

I'm tired of explaining what I am doing and why I am taking photos of airliners and with a long lens. Planespotting used to be very relaxing for me. Now, everytime I hear a car drive up I tense up and feel it's someone that's going to harass me about "what I'm doing with that camera." I am not doing anything illegal and want to stop feeling nervous.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for "increased vigilance" post 9-11, but jeez... c'mon, there's gotta be a way to show people that I am no different than any other hobbyist.

I'm a designer by occupation, so I did what's natural. I made some bumperstickers. Take a look at them. Two relate directly to this issue and one is for fun. If there's enough interest in them, I'll print them and just charge a few bucks for production and shipping. This is a non-profit project.

See them here: http://exitrow.freeservers.com

Please excuse the Freeserver ads. It's the only way I could get hosting that can handle a lot of hits. (I think.)

William,

I'm right there with you. Looks like we were posting at almost the same time. If you have the energy to read a novel, take a look at my post about my experience today.

I like the last bumper sticker the best. Keep us up to date with your plans to get them made up.

I know what you mean, too! I used to park my car and listen to 'The Sounds of Sinatra' every Sunday at my local airport,ROC,before the a$$hole Sheriffs got a bug up thier a$$ about kicking people out of airport property spotting places! I just love looking in my side-view mirror and seeing Joe buzzcut ex-Marine -gonna save the world cop walikng up to my car with his hand on his sub-standard Glock like I'm Bin Laden himself!!!!!!!!!!
Now I gotta find a new off-airport property spot so they can't say $hit about me sitting there! I wish my backwards airport would make a nice spotting area like real cities like LAS and FLL have, but that'll never happen 'cause they got thier heads up thieru-know-whats! Sorry, but this just pisses me off to no end!

Yeah, it has gotten out of control. I am sick of being looked at by passing cars in odd ways, and feeling "guilty" when you are really not.

I would be interested in the #1 and #3 bumper stickers if you made them, keep us updated  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Did you ever think of putting this on hats and shirts too? I would buy one of your bumper stickers too. I had a bad experience too and you should read it too. I'll post the link here.

Hang in there fellas... maybe things will get better. You have to realize one thing - Pavlov - I think that was his name - is credited for training what they thought at the time to be mindless animals - well...

Hitler also trained "mindless" animals to do his dirty work...

Animals without capacity for "true thought" were also trained recently to make September 11 an unfortunate reality.

What I am trying to say is this -

When you are hassled by law enforcement officials for taking photos of aircraft - DONT take it too serious. They are merely "trained monkeys" doing their job.

However, what bothers me most is the fact that while this country (USA) has stepped up security on the FRONT DOOR - these bastard terrorists will sneak in through the back door - and once again do something that we thought was impossible...

I like number 2 the most, I would definately like to see these be made available. Either in sticker form, or on a t-shirt perhaps. Good work!

Wow. I guess I am not the only one who feels this way. Thanks for the kind words.

I have a business relationship with a silkscreener that I'll ask to price this for me. It's been my experience that t-shirts will be too costly for me to produce. Sorry.

If you are serious about wanting these, post here or e-mail me directly and when I get these made up I'll contact you.

Thanks.

ExitRow,

Great idea for raising public awareness of planespotters!  Big thumbs up

Taking Cfalks's suggestion, here are a couple more ideas:

Planespotting
Just a hobby, NOT a crime!

or

Planespotters
We're not security risks, just plane enthusiasts!

Don't need em' here in Houston......yet! Still, I would like all 3 if you should ever decide to market them.

how about:

"Planespotters Rule,
Cops Drool"

or...

"Go catch some real criminals"

That's guarenteed to get some attention.

I'd slap that on my bumper!

Well, I am glad to see a lot of you share my feelings and like the bumpersticker ideas. I got a good response back from spotters worldwide. But, unfortunately, not enough of a response to make printing these as bumperstickers cost effective. So, instead, I've supplied all three as downloadable pdf files. Just click on the link underneath each sticker for the file. Feel free to print these as you wish. I don't think I need to go through the whole "copyrighted material" lecture with you guys. Just don't print them up and sell them for profit. If you do... send me some cash, I need a few new lenses. Big grin

I'd be interested in #2 on a t-shirt but without "damn", so I could wear it to school.

Good idea...especially at Boston. At least there is Manchester, NH for me, where the people actually are interested in my hobby (they ask me questions ranging from if their plane has arrived to whats the biggest plane I've ever seen). And there are people wanting to take photos of planes at MHT!

Quick request:

If anyone makes these into stickers and puts them on their cars (or other strange places) I'd love to see pictures of them "in situ."

Not an ego thing. More of a "neat-o" thing. Also, if you have any cool stories of interactions you've had as a result of them would be good to hear.

As time goes by, I realize these stickers could have a real recruiting value. I'd love to hear feedback.

Thanks to everyone.
