Day At MAN Shooting Pics?

Hey,

Well the time has come that I plan another day at MAN for photography.

This time I am going there with new methodys of photography in my head from what advice I have been given from people in this forum. Also with more knowledge of setting out a decent photo and not just point and shoot.

What would be cool is if any MAN regular who reads these forums could meet up with me there, and if they are a photographer give me more advice, actually talking to someone is a great way of improving ones self as it sticks in the head. Thats what I think anyway.

But overall it would be nice to see someone who is like myself in a way. Instead of having to either walk around an airport on my own or risk being aproached every two seconds by some one who wants to know what the registration of a small cessna was that parked up at the other side of the apron.

Out of my expiriences of visiting airports MAN comes bottom of the league in openess. At MAN no1 chats to you or starts conversation, gets really boring when you are on your own, no scanner, just you, your camera, binoculars and a logbook. LHR is just the same, when i first went there was just me and this guy all day, i heard him speak once, thats when I asked does he regularly go to LHR. You would have thought that a person from Sheffield, on boxing day, would have got some sort of conversation going with the regulars. Then the second time I went with friends, I wasnt going through the episode of speachlessness all day. Then comes EMA, while me and a friend was driving up from London to my house in South Yorkshire we nipped to EMA. Just for an hour or two. We went to the viewing area and within 10 minutes we was talking to a fellow aviation photographer, and kept talking until we had to make a move.....enough of my little stories....

Come on MAN spotters or photographers, show yourself and show you are not all grumpy boring old sods! (Sorry but thats all I can say with my past expiriences, hope I have not offended anyone).....any replys welcome!

Yours Sincerely,
Jason Nicholls

Have to say I find the same thing whenever and wherever I go (MAN, LHR, BHX... etc.). Although I'm often out in the middle of nowhere shooting by myself, on the occasions when I'm on the roof at MAN or LHR or at the viewing park at MAN or BHX, it's very rare to talk to anyone. Usually it's one guy who either recognises me, or has a question about my camera. But the regulars stick together in little groups and won't talk to an "outsider" (what, more interested in taking photos than taking down regs?) like me. It doesn't bother me to be honest - I'm there to take pics, and more often than not, there's no-one around at the remote spots I frequent anyway.

I'm quite happy to meet up with you if we manage to intersect at MAN (though my work schedule is sometimes restrictive, and I'm probably there more often on weekdays at short notice than at weekends). Drop me an email, and I'll see what I can do.

I actually find it the same most of the time wherever I go.

Although there was this one time a couple of weeks ago when I got chatting and look where it got me.

They had me walking through some field of mud and what ever else it was to get to a photo spot at the slowest time of day there was. Ended up doing all of that for about 3 pics of BA aircraft (EMB-145 and 737).  Laugh out loud

Only kidding, I'll be at MAN again next weekend if the weathers nice and BHX a couple of times the week after.

Hey Dan - Yeah sorry about that, not even I knew that it would be that muddy! But hell, when there are operations of separting a/c on 24R that spot will be damn good! It may have seemed to have been a waste of time, but now when you go you know another good spot to get some good pictures of departing a/c! Maybe we should have just parked up at the side of that main road and shot some pictures of aircraft going overhead lol.

Well I am still trying to find a suitable date when I will be going next, but when I have a few dates in mind I will post them and we could sort something. Will be great to meet up with guys from on here  Smile. Will be very cool to meet up with you Chris and I will notify you of any dates ASAP via e-mail. Dan it will also be great to meet you once again, was great that day at MAN in my small hidie hole, may not be better than the area beside Runway 2 but its very cool for photo's when 24R is used for departures.

Yours Sincerely,
Jason Nicholls,

OK it wasn't that bad, the spot will be very useful for the 3 hours when the second runway is closed. I'm thinking of giving it a go with a pair of steps so I can get just a bit higher for arriving aircraft.

I'll be at MAN on FRI, SAT or SUN if a sunny day is predicted.
Also at BHX on Mon (11th).

Looking further afield EMA on the bmibaby start up day (I think 23 March).

I have to disagree with some of the comments here. I was at the viewing park at MAN on Friday afternoon from 1.30 to about 4pm and I had long conversations with a couple of guys there. It takes two to make conversation and do any of you actually start the ball rolling? In general I've always found someone willing to strike up a conversation at most airports I've been to (Maybe its just me and my approachable nature!)
I agree that the little cliques of regular spotters are probably best ignored.

Quote from the first post I made....

"LHR is just the same, when i first went there was just me and this guy all day, i heard him speak once, thats when I asked does he regularly go to LHR. You would have thought that a person from Sheffield, on boxing day, would have got some sort of conversation going with the regulars."

I do try and start conversation in the best possible way, but most people I try and make conversation with want none of it. Maybe its just me.

Anyway I almost have a few dates in mind for going to MAN. I will be posting them shortly  Smile.

Didn't know about the JMC A330 or any of the others.

Probably have a run up on Sunday then to get the Egyptair 777 on the new runway and if that Syrianair is ontime I may get that too.

PS I'll be at BHX on Mon 11 because two Aer Lingus A330's (or one making two trips) are due in for the Cheltenham races.

so you was there while I was Alex???

I was wearing a blue coat with a Puma sign on the back (My Sheffield Wednesday Coat) I also carried around a Le Coq Sportif bag. I dunno how I could have missed you lol.

For a matter of fact that pic isnt the best my camera can do, and its not had much of an enhancement, just a resize lol, all my pics I upload now get the full on enhancement treatment  Smile.

I use a Fuji Finepix 2600....I was the only one using a tripod as far as I could see on the gallery.

Also as for seeing Concorde we left before it arrived, I think it came in quite late, but we saw 3 in the maintinence area of BA's.

I think the main problem when going shooting at airports is the differentiation between two different groups, which I believe has been highlighted in another thread someone on the forum.

There are two groups of people who visit airports, plane spotters and plane photograhers. Plane spotters are the ones who wear binoculars, have cameras, and their logbook tucked under their arm as if its a piece of gold bullion. Woe betide if *THAT* went missing...they'd rather lose their camera. Ok, maybe my stereotype just hit 90,000 feet...

Then you have people like myself, who don't care about the registration number of planes, well - they're useful when uploading but I don't see them as essential. I care more about coming away with reel/memory cards full of shots which I've been able to experiment with.

It feels to me that the spotters at the airports are noticing a trend with more and more photographers visiting the airports and invading their territory - especially with the advent of mainstream digital technology. What was their getaway has been invaded by so-thought computer-literate, technology-savvy, computer geeks, and it not right.

My uncle has been visiting airports for 30 years, and has many photographs of aircraft, however his main passion is his logbook. When I present him with my pics he sighs and shakes his head mumbling "The youth of today".

Just my 2p.

S.

HiYa,
I have taken loads of pictures at MAN in the past year (my latest visit being last Saturday) I got good shots of Corsair 747SP!

My local is BHX, but I go to MAN alot as its easy and cheap on the coach! People talk to me wherever I go, even on holiday from places like San Francisco to Varna, Bulgaria - and I keep in contact with as many as I can.

If anybody wants to meet me at BHX or indeed MAN please contact me via my website at bhxonline.co.uk and i'll be happy to arrange something. I can also meet people at EMA (31/03/02 - flying out but can c neone before i fly out that afternoon) or DUB (on 05/04/02).

I'm at BHX every weekend. Dont forget the website!

Subtitled "Scotty makes Daring Cross Border daylight raid on MAN and BHX".

Managed to get 90 mins at BHX and 2 hours at MAN yesterday and today respectively, with camera. Highlight probably the new JMC A330 at MAN today and Aero Lloyd A321 (with FC Bayern?).

Here's a few thoughts on all of the above.

First, you guys are full of accurate info, especially re the mud at MAN on the south side of 06R as it was today. Great places to shoot from but the friggin MUD is pure hippopotamus heaven. Lucky I'd brought me wellies. No problem with car parking etc.

And the spotters at the aviation viewing park dont want to know about guys with cameras and no logbook! The guy who runs the wee shop is OK though and full of gen.

Re BHX, many thanks to whoever has made the er...photographic access point....(ie hole) in the fence at the spec area to the south side of T2. Very convenient. If it was EDI it would be covered up within seconds by the airport's ever vigilant crack anti-spotter hit squad.

And now I know where all the Jungle Jets go for lunch. How many EMBs and CRJs can one man handle????

Good days both - thanks for all the info. Here's to the next time - hopefully a bright sunny summer Saturday with 24L in use at MAN

Scotty

I will arrive at the MAN train station around 7:30 AM......and I will be staying till quite late afternoon/early evening.

As for where, well first I normally hit the top of the T1 car park...so there would be cool if you are there early...if not I usually then hang around at the pub down by 24R when take offs change to there for a few hours. After that is unknown to me lol. Seen as me and my friend will not be there with a car we wont be driving too far, but we will try and go wherever out feet can take us. AI am making a vow that I am NOT going into the field accross form the airport pub.....not a chance...after last time I wont be going there until the height of summer!

A nip down to my spot by the storage area would be cool if anything is parked down there. Or a small treck to the aviation viewing park (next to the engine test barrier thingy lol) wouldnt go amiss.

If anyone going has any suggestions of where and when I would greatly consider it Big grin.

i generally avoid T1 car park as you are really limited to what you get.. ( T2 only )

but it would be a good meeting place for anyone else turning up , then go on somewhere else ..

we Manchester regulars can show you the "secret" hidey holes

see ya later APS

Well im up for anything, as long as we can get some nice pics! I am pretty much a regular when you consider the distance I have to travel to get to MAN and the frequency of visits I undertake.

Also coudl we say an 8AM - 8:30AM meet up? if thats ok with anyone turning up?

Also yes I do know its a Monday! The new China Airlines Cargo route is undertaken on thet day Big grin and a few more biggies Big grin. If you cant make it for the Monday I could change to the Sunday, depending on the trains in and out of Sheffield. I want to be there as early and stay as late as possible, but Sundays may prevent this with lower train frequency.
