Oh my goodness!!! That is awesome, and before anyone says, I don't think there is any chance that this is fake, those contrails are just too detailed to be faked. Awesome shot!

The plane is 1000ft below, one usually sees the contrails at around 30,000->40,000 above. And yes, 1000ft vertical separation is allowed in European and Northern Atlantic Airspace. They decided to implement this because the airspace has been so crowded and this doubled the capacity, as radars nowadays are good enough for 'seeing' planes 1000ft vertically apart it isn't a security risk either.

Sorry to sound picky (I'm not honestly !!) but I do want to correct a bit of info.

There is no radar coverage over Atlantic airspace, the separation is the same as before totally procedural.........vertical, longitudinal, speed or latitude.

The intorduction of RVSM is based on improved altimitry and each airliner to gain RVSM status must meet strict altitude reporting criteria.
Not all aircraft are RVSM approved.
Of course RVSM has now been implemented over Europe in domestic as well as Oceanic airspace.

I'm sorry to say this but the pic looks like....fake

when you look at the light direction on the cloud below, the sunlight was coming from the upper right corner, when you look at the contrail, the sunlight came directly from the right.

2nd:

the contrail looks separated "from the background". the cloud below are hazy and brown colored, while on the contrail, you see a very bright white and the shadow on the left side contrail looks "detached" from the background.

I seriously doubt that it's fake. I spent a lot of time with that one, and even sent it to another screener who was online at the same time, and we both agreed that it looked legit...a very lucky shot...

I think it has to do with the inner two contrails combining together with the outer two.

Yes you are correct the W after the vortex category and type would mean RVSM compliant.

Example:

H/B744/W

For non-RVSM it would simply show the aircraft has standard Mode C altitude reporting:

M/B752/C

No I work in Terminal Control, which handles flights departing and arriving in the South East UK from ground level to approx 24,000 ft.
The high altitude traffic is worked by our shiny new (well it was when it was built!) centre at Swanwick.

Thank you all for the appreciation of my photo! Until yesterday I didn't even notice that there are several forum threads about that.
First, when I saw the contrails myself, I didn't believe they were true. Even the captain admitted never having seen contrails that large. The reason in this case is a unusual high humidity of the air above the closed layer of clouds below. Then there's the 747 without wingtips, causing (visibly) powerful wake vortices. As I remember, there has also been a strong crosswind.
I'm still working out what's the registration of this 747. I've contacted a colleague who was a flight engineer with KLM, maybe he can help.
