Hassles At US Airports....on The Decline?

Wed Oct 02, 2002 11:32 am

Over the past 3-4 months I have noticed something here on this forum. There seems (to me anyway) to have been a drop off in complaints by photographers/spotters concerning hassles by local law enforcement and airport officials.

So how are things at some of the nations more notorious airports? In particular......

ORD
JFK
MIA
FLL
LAX

I have noticed an increasing number of images from these airports in the past few months which would seem to confirm my suspicions.

Let us hope that we are seeing the last of the 'knee jerk' reactions from local officials. Now all we have to do is convince the nervous nellies with cell phones that we are harmless and sometimes friendly!

I've visited LAX twice this summer and am planning to go back this weekend. No problems there at all.

It was a refreshing change from the east coast airports where the police weren't that friendly even before 9/11.

As was predicted in the months following 9-11 you just have to let things settle down a bit. People are becoming more comfortable with security issues, and fewer people are seeing a terrorist under every rock. It is up to us to be responsible in our hobby and to continue to educate people about the hobby.

Keep using common sense and 99% of the issues will go away.

Can't comment on the airports you listed, but I visted KSEA last month and got questioned once by the police. He thought I had car trouble, and was very surprised when he saw me taking pictures. He checked my I.D. and left with a very confused look on his face.

Here in Denver it is rare to get questioned. Once, I pulled into the parking lot of the main fire house which is just yards from the taxi way, walked up to three police cars sitting in the lot and asked the officers if it would be o.k. to take some pictures. One of them said "sure, why not? This looks like it would be a great place..."

Go figure.

Re Jeff's post about SEA, it always surprises me that airport employees and people who work in and around the airport (e.g., security) find it so perplexing that someone could have aircraft photography as a hobby and always act as thought they've never seen anyone photographing a plane before.

I'm not going to bash things that other people do, but I can think of many more bizarre hobbies that people don't have half the trouble understanding.

We've been almost spoiled here in Houston over the last year. We photographers and spotters don't carry things that would arouse the interest of HPD. (K-Mart bags, Sonic cups, half-eaten cheese Coneys; you Houstonians out there know what I'm talking about)
