28th May 2003 - Champs League Final At MANchester

Thu Mar 20, 2003 7:13 am

Just a quickie to say that for the Brits (and others) who are bothered, there should be a "fly-in" of 1 set of supporters + team from continental Europe for the Champs League Final as a result of tonights fixtures. 3 Spanish, 3 Italian and 1 Dutch make up the "foreign" sides in the Quarter Finals, along with Man Utd.

Reserve your spot now!

Yup, absolutely excellent news - the best possible result for airline enthusiasts. Newcastle and Arsenal out, now all we need is Man U to get the order of the boot and its going to be a really great day.

Spanish.....hmmm...sure Spanair, Air Europa, Futura and Iberworld a/c would excite you?
Italian....ok, slightly better, possibly Air Europe 777, Volareweb A320, Eurofly A320 and various Alitalia a/c
Dutch....usual Dutch charters.

Is it possible to reach the great spots at MAN without having a car?

I wouldn't hesitate to take a flight to MAN just for that  Smile

Zander, I've asked about the possibility of having the normal weekend bus service from the bus station to the viewing park introduced on the day.

I believe that the game against Basle it took around 20 minutes from the time you joined the queue to the time you parked your car in the viewing park.

I've also got a printout of the bus services to the airport cargo centre...from there it's meant to be a short walk to the viewing park.

Graham. I'm looking forward to seeing a few Iberia heavies...remember the Hampden Park final?

There will most likely be a United vs Real Madrid match in the quarters. Look out for United vs Inter in the final at Old Trafford.  Smile

No comment, I actually can see us going down now to Division 2  Sad.

Who's bothered about doubles, it will be a great day out anyway and a great chance to actually see MAN at its capacity. And why upload here if there are doubles here there are other places, and my own personal site, so I havnt got to worry about bad double  Smile

I was thinking of making the tip up on the 28th. But after reading a few comments im starting to wonder that by the time i get there (09.00 am) if there will be any space left in the viewing area car park. Can anyone estimate how bad its going to be to get a spot in the car park !!!!

Thanks

Kirk,
I was at GLA last year and there were 5 IB 340s in and I don't think it was Spanish tourists coming to admire the local women and haggis.

I will be up on the 27th and 28th as will Ndebele and Godbless will be up on the 27th.MAN will be packed no doubt.

LHRSIMON

I arrived at the viewing park last Weds 12th at 8.45am and there very few spaces left then (I parked on the very back row). All the viewing mounds were pretty full as well.
I only live 3 miles away but on the East side of the airport so I might cycle there on the 28th May.

Looking good for an all-foreign final!

The Quarter-final draw is this:

1. Real Madrid v Manchester United
2. Inter Milan v Valencia
3. Ajax v AC Milan
4. Juventus v Barcelona

Semi-final draw

1. Winner of Q-F 1 v Winner of Q-F 4
2. Winner of Q-F 3 v Winner of Q-F 2

The quarter-finals will be played on 8-9 April and 22-23 April with the semi-finals on 6-7 May and 13-14 May.

Why were they on 24L Lee? Was 24R closed and did they continue to use 24L after 12pm?

I was going to go today, but decided on tomorrow instead.

I don't think a plane landing on 24L would be very funny on 28th May, considering there is a possibility about 100 planes may be parked there Big grin

Craig.

Craig, it was an airport variation of "there's a hole in your bucket" for the closure, which happened after 15.00. Back to normal by around 18.45.

I wish I could have seen them landing on 24L, quite a headache for ATC no doubt!
Also wish I could be there on the 28th but i'll be back in the East Midlands then. Oh well i'll just have to make the most of my time off back home in Manchester for a whole month! Bring it on Big grin

Just after 3pm they closed 24R to all traffic to make some repairs I think. That meant that the queuesfor outbound flights built up a bit while the inbound flights landed, taxied to the end of the runway to turn off, then came all the way back down it again. They had a 4 plane convoy at one point all steaming down 24L while 3 were waiting at the other end to take off.

Different that's for sure.

I will also be joining jason, for those with a car tho. We heard roumors from the viewing area that they will be charged £8 a car PLUS ENTRY FEE.

IMO thats a rip off, especially when you can get to 06L for free, and even better for those that I know who can get airside!!!!.
We were discussing taking our asses a bit further down to 06L Threshold or the 24R "spot" between the pub and the perimiter fence, you can get some really nice pics there.

Same offer as jason, I got a spare room for anyone that needs it, OR
**KEVIN GETS A BRAINWAVE!!**

Lets go CAMPING

It will be in the summer, so it wont be THAT cold, and seeing as MAN is in the middle of the countryside anyways hehe, I reckon it would be fun.

Kaddy, the latest info I had (22nd March) is as follows:

"There will be no increase in the viewing park charges except MAYBE that the weekend/bank holiday rule may apply, and if you intend to use the viewing park I would suggest start queueing around 05.30!! Don't know if you are aware but for the Man U v. Basle game, the gates were closed at 09.15 and you were only allowed on, on a one out, one in basis"

Seeing that the whole world and his dog now seems intent in coming here. methinks I'll stay at home and watch them float by from my nice vantage point!

You dont really need the viewing area, /me thinks that its just because there is a cafe there that people go there, but you can just go a little further down, or even to the pub of 24R is in use as I posted. that makes the Viewing area not the best place then  Smile also your shots will be different to every1 else.

Shaun - I will talk to yu on MSN

I think the camping idea is a great 1, we can start a fire, toast marshmellows and sing cumbyah hehe

£8 would be a right royal rip off but I wouldn't think they would do this as it would give them a very bad name. I would also agree with the get to the viewing park very early comments. Be there around 7 as I wouldn't be surprised if it opens early after the traffic problems on the 12th. It will be interesting to see where people go.

@LHR Simon,

It opens at 07:30am, but the que to get in is going to be about
10 miles long so you wont get in till 09:30am. I would suggest going to another spot.

More updates:

Viewing Park opening hours: 07:30 to 21:30.
Charges: Same as midweek chages
Extra staff have been arranged to quickly process visitors and car parking.
Coached: contact Bollin Valley Rangers
Bus link: Airport rail station to viewing park "frequently" between 08:00 and 18:00

Now the bit for you photogs:
Taxiway Alpha which runs alongside the viewing park will be kept open as a taxiway to enable enthusiasts to photograph the visiting aircraft Executive and GA aircraft will park on Taxiways Bravo and Charlie plus the Grass Parking Area - all of which are next to the Viewing Park.

Little aside:
Perhaps 200 "parking positions" may be required given the correct circumstances! (I don't know how many aircraft NEA can park on their bit & light aircarft park, but there's around 90 odd gates - some 30 or so are "remote" positions)
