Okay folks...more info about aircraft parking:

Both runways open until the early evening
Aircraft to be parked between the runways (estimated that up to 46 738s can be parked there!) in addition to all available space round the terminals/remote areas.
24L/06R to have aircraft towed into it to allow quick "getaways".
Taxiways B and C to be used for parking executive aircraft.

Don't forget the "mini" Spanish invasion on Tuesday/Wednesday that is expected:
Tuesday: Spanair A321 (staying overnight) + Iberia A340 (lunchtime)
Wednesday: 2 Air Europa 738s (arriving morning, staying all day), 2 Skynet 734s (arriving afternoon, 1 to nightstop), Spanair MD83 (arrving afternoon) and Iberia A340 (arriving late at night)

Well we've definitely got two foreign teams, definitely an Italian (probably two) but I'd guess one Spanish and an Italian, can't complain either way!

Looking good so far!

I imagine that the arrivals will arrive from mid-morning onwards (and we had a fair number of decent biz jets today to give a flavour of what can be expected e.g. Qatari Royal Flight A320, P4- BBJ).

Fellows,
I booked a ticket to MAN but I am in a "shitty" situation : Neither my English correspondent and Belgian friend can't get the day off for the 28th.
I was wondering if there is any MAN-spotter who is willing to pick me up at the airport on arrival and join me along the good MAN-spottingplaces ? If somebody is willing, I will sent him the arrival details by personal mail.
Hope to get some good news back !
Anyway, thanks in advance

Insider info ....

R2 will be only used for small aircraft as they are going back to the plan of close half the runway.. the other half will become a "car park" (at the moment) i think they really are unsure about the exact volume of traffic thats going to be arriving.

The "visitors" are expected to start arriving on the Monday with the bulk of them then arriving from the Tues...

Still unsure of exactly how many slots there will be but im sure we will have a better idea after this Weds..

cheers all

Regarding the Viewing Park, Pub or Level 13 of the car park.....Over the past 2 days they have been PACKED, especially the Aviation Viewing Park, hardenly ANY spaces left for cars to park..... and this was just on a Bank Holiday! Just imagien what its gonna be like on the 28th May, its in a school holiday, and the busiest day of the airports history.....and the Aviation Viewing Park will be operating a 1 out 1 in policy to allow cars to get in.....now imagine getting into a que of traggic for the viewing park, id have to say you have next to no chance of getting in, who the hell would want to get there, and then leave without seeing most or all of the aircrfat that are due in? No-One thats who.

At the airport pub they charge for parking and have not alot of spaces, and the LOOONG road from T3 to the pub is all Double Yellow lined, and that means a ticket if your caught parking there, and about 5 or 6 drivers found out today. May 28th will be a Traffic Wardens heaven, so be warned.

Just thought id share this info with you if you are planning on travelling in a car, if possible share with friends to keep the amount of spaces avaliable open. Dont forget, your not the only enthusiast wanting to have a great day on the 28th.

Just to add, the field next to the aviation viewing park will be opened up for extra parking space so this should soak up some of the extra demand. Personally, train and bus would sound like a pretty good plan. I wish I was going to be there on the 28th, but no i'll be stuck down in the East Midlands at university, oh well Sad I hope all of you who are there get some great photos so you can show me what I missed!

 Big thumbs up

well im a regular at MAN (i work there) so i suggest parking in the car parks in Stockport and take the 199 bus to the airport, and either take the bus to the viewing area (which will be operational on that day) or walk round to the toher side of the airfield (like im going to do) and get some good shots near the fire training facility.
I suggest you park in stockport as MAN will probobally be packed, also its saying that up to 200 aircraft may be visiting altogether (not including private aircraft or biz-jets)
wow i cant wait, im really looking forward to the 28th and finding out whos going to be playing, its going to be a very memorable day for MAN and myself...
Ive heard its going to be 30 times busier than when Concorde used to come in, so that gives some comparison to the whole day.
Its not the fall that kills u, its the sudden stop at the end..

Just a little thought??

where are all us photographers going to go on the day of the 28th. If its going to be as busy as people say, there is going to be a lot of hustle and bustle. Is it going to be a case of sleeping bags for 3 days prior to the event??

just a thought.

If you're in the pub all day, you aren't going to have many pictures to upload - not unless you're going to go to the Airport Hotel or the Tatton Arms. Me, I don't want to shoot into sun or get "Myrtle Avenue" type shots, so I doubt I'll be at either of those. But I think it'll all be over by around 18:00, and then I sure might be looking for a pub... Either that, or I'll be racing home to upload my pictures! Big grin

MAN has issued a press release about the day, of which the pertinent bits are:

a) up to 38,000 fans expected in total (why? the ground hold 60,000 plus!), and
b) up to 24,000 on the day itself.

So, you may as well pitch a tent and be there for the whole of the week!

Jon01, you are wright by saying that not all Italian companies can handle the traffic so we can hope for a variety of charters.
Moreover, I heard that the airport is closing 1 runway to park all the aircrafts. Can anybody confirm this ?
By the way, I found a pal who is more than able enough to meet me at the airport and show me around.
See ya,

Hi all!

Not sure to what extent this might impact viewing/photography from the favoured south side but this info has been released by The Airports General Manager Airfield and Chair of the Champions League Steering Group for the airport with a request it be placed on Aviation enthusiasts Web pages and e-mail lists...

Manchester Airport has been planning for the Champions League Final for
almost 2 years. These plans are now at a mature state for handling huge
numbers of additional passengers and aircraft movements. It is of course
recognised that the event will also attract large numbers of Aviation
Enthusiasts not only from Manchester but all over the UK and indeed
Europe.

An aircraft movement rate of 55 movements per hour has been agreed
throughout the day.Runway 2 will remain open during the normal lunch
time
closure period.Aircraft will be parked on Taxiways over the whole
airfield.

Manchester Airport will therefore cater for the needs of Aviation
Enthusiasts by establishing special facilities which we trust will both
be
respected and enjoyed for this unique occasion:-

1.The Aviation Viewing Park.

This is the best place for aviation enthusiasts to view and photograph
visiting aircraft on Wednesday 28th May .

Special opening times have now been agreed -

The Aviation Viewing Park (located off the A538 Wilmslow Road, near the
Romper Pub) will open from 06.30hrs to 21.30 hrs

A huge field adjoining the park is available for overflow car parking.3
additional fields located in the vicinity of the AVP will also be
available
subject to demand .Spectators will be directed to these areas if demand
requires.

Admission charges to the Aviation Viewing Park will not be increased for
the day ie the low weekday rates will apply.

2 double deck open top busses will be located in the Viewing Park for
photographers - a small admission charge will be made for entry.

Exclusive photographic locations are being made available (Subject to
Approval)

A Special Shuttle bus will operate (The A1) from the Airport Rail
Station
to the Aviation Viewing Park :-

>From 06.00 to 08.00 every 30 minutes from the rail station
>From 08.00 to 18.00 every 15 minutes from the rail station
>From 18.00 to 20.00 every 30 minutes from the rail station - last bus
from the AVP departs at 20.15.

Extra toilets, catering, ice cream, drinks and enthusiasts facilities
including flight time table and check lists will also be available from
the AVP.

Aircraft will route via Taxiway Alpha to enable photographic
opportunities for enthusiasts from the AVP.

Executive Jet parking will take place on Taxiways Bravo and Charlie
opposite the Aviation Viewing Park

A car share scheme to The Aviation Viewing Park has been established -
WWW.liftshare.com.

2.Level 13 Multi Story Car Park Terminal 1

The Airports official Spectator Area will remain open together with The
Aviation Shop and Refreshment Kiosk.

Normal Car Parking rates will apply.

Enthusiasts are requested to only utilise the above facilities.

The Greater Manchester and Cheshire Police will strictly enforce
restrictions at other areas around the airport. This is absolutely
essential to ensure access for vehicular traffic associated with the Champions
League Final and the Emergency Services is not prohibited. .

Please use and enjoy the special facilities which have been provided for
you at The Aviation Viewing Park.

Hope this is of some use.

I totally agree with this and hope that visitors will park their cars sensibly. Remember that most of the roads leading to southside (and the aviation viewing park) have a crash gate at the end of them and mustn't be blocked by careless and insensitive parking. If you do park sensibly, then the police should have no reason to bother you.

I don't read this as "don't go southside", which is, for the most part, a public right of way. It is more a plea to respect the area and don't spoil for others, one of the best aviation photography spots that we have.

Regards,
Craig.

Hi all

Well, at least one Airliners.net Screener will not be there  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

My criteria for screening pics will be:

1. Scottish based photographers will have first chance of uploads.
2. A local Mancunian will have to bribe me next week for the chance of his stuff being uploaded as priority.

All fun stuff so don't take it too seriously.

Just a pity that I will not make it down..........work stuff comes first!

For all you photographers that will be there...........have a great time and I will keep my fingers crossed that the weather will be good.

Looking forward to screening the pics.

Cheers

Time will tell, but the authorities there are proving to be very positive towards us enthusiasts - they deserve a vote of thanks for making the effort but I think even 20 open top buses would get full up!

I've been looking at the database for Birmingham March 17, 1999 which was the UEFA Cup Final. Surprisingly only three photos are there, but the weather was quite mediocre and some of the good stuff was not always easy to photograph well.
There were plenty of photographers there that Wednesday, so perhaps we ought to be going through our old slides....

"For all you photographers that will be there...........have a great time and I will keep my fingers crossed that the weather will be good.

Looking forward to screening the pics."

Kind words from a kind man, thank-you Gary ....

Shaun

P.S, "2. A local Mancunian will have to bribe me next week for the chance of his stuff being uploaded as priority."

Atp,
Be optimistic.
I found other weathersites where fairly good weather is forecasted :

Even BBC forecasts fairly good weather.
Conditions might not be optimal on the 28th but to my opinion, it looks good !
See you all on the 28th !
