This has always been a potential problem with any 3rd party lens, but increasingly so with highly automated electronic cameras - in effect, since much of Canon's technology is still patented and subject to licence (or possibly not even patented to preserve secrecy) 3rd party manufacturers sometimes need to "reverse engineer" to create a compatible mount. While this works most of the time, the one thing they can't reverse engineer is Canon's development plans - a new body may utilise an aspect of a Canon lens in a different way to previous bodies which may not be allowed by the 3rd party version.
In the case of Sigma, I understand that a number of lenses have problems with the 10D, but the problems are understood and fixable. I think newer lenses incorporate the fix. I'm sure I have also read that Sigma in the US and UK will modifiy any lenses which don't work (free?).
Cheers,
