Back Lit Shots

Fri Oct 10, 2003 11:23 pm

Hi All,

Pretty happy tonight. I was at viewing platform in Sydney (YSSY/SYD) one morning before a flight on VH-OJH. Saw the new Wunula landing very softly onto Rwy 34R.

I would not normally be where I was for photos given the backlit situation, and I only saw Wunula split seconds before I cranked the 10D up.

It's situations like this I swear by my 10D now. And the results aren't too bad given the lighting and speed at which I had to race to get the shot:

Hope you like it as much as I did....
I have always avoided back lit photos, but this might lead me to experiment.

I'd like people to share their own back lit shots.... any come to mind?

Regards

Glenn, you have discovered one of the joys of the 10D. I am a big fan of backlit shots right now, and DFW is a great airport for these images, especially since you can get so close to the action with good angles and excellent light. Plug fest time...

That is a nice shot.

Portrait lighting...any camera can do it.

Pah, youngsters today!  Smile

In my day we had manual focus, manual metering, manual wind-on, slide film, etc, etc...

Sometimes, we still managed to get a half-decent shot though (taken 1975, scanned 2003) -

Riely (Ryan),

I have always enjoyed that shot, and the others like it. I can't wait to get my 10D. Hope to see you soon @ DFW.

excellent shot!

This one would never have worked WITHOUT the backlighting. I was really pleased with the result, although it was 100% manual metering as I've learnt not to trust the meter under such circumstances:

This wasn't a shot I planned for. I was with Tom Turner and Justin Cederholm, just before we went out of the ramp. We just happened to be looking at the 225 and heard the Concorde taking off. I was the only one who was within reach of a camera, so I threw it up there at the last second without even really composing or preparing. I was surprised it turned out, my only regret was it's not on digital.

I especially like backlit shots when they were taken in a dusk or dawn situation.

I love back lit shots because the lighting has great effects! And they are also challenging to get right. Great shots Glenn and Riley.

I live within walking distance of an airfield (North) so backlit subjects are common, I have to walk many miles to get to the South side. Here are my offerings

Funny, out of the whole 15 shots I have in the database - I do manage to have one back-lit shot.

Only found one amongst my 23 A.net shots. Here's my contribution, thanks to the amazing capabilities of the 10D!

I also had a nice Concorde shot [well, actually I had some more], but this one wasn't quite up to a.net standards:
