Crazy Sydney - 12,000 Shots And Growing

Tue Oct 14, 2003 12:12 am

Hi All,

I looked at the Sydney shots only to note that we've hit 12,000.
So damn quick.... and if I can calculate correctly, that makes us either number 2 or number 3 most photographed airport on Airliners.net

Thanks goes to Norbert Genci for the 12,000 shot:

Anyway.... Any non Australians have a favourite Sydney shot they've taken while visiting?

Great job guys,
looks like Sydney has about as many different spots as spotters. Something amazing is that there are only a couple shots on the database in bad weather from Sydney...

Anyway.... Any non Australians have a favourite Sydney shot they've taken while visiting?

Nope, but I will next August when I come to Australia. Beware  Nuts

Cheers guys,
Tim

Syndey is definately the hot-spot for aviation photography and great people to hang-out like Glenn, Sam, Norbert, Marius and many more I have not yet met. Definately a yearly destination for me. My fav. shots are:

Thanks for the additions guys.

Damn Jay.... you ended up getting Emirates before I could (Emirates was never quite shootable until they started flying to NZ recently).
Reg, nice shot of VH-EBU - very lucky with that sunrise.

Unique.... yep, Zurich 14,000.... I think that pushes Sydney back a touch. It's obviously grown since I last looked.

Sydney is fast becoming incredibly boring for me, but country airfields and bugsmashers.... bring them on! As this website becomes fast poo-looted with the same old shots that have all been done before I think we all need to start "looking outside the square" as they say..... anyone agree?

Don't get me wrong, I love taking photos at Sydney - we all do because it's so easy to do.

Not to worry Glenn, im sure with the rapid growth of the 10D population here in oz, that by the end of the next spotting weekend SYD will bounce back.

Hehehe - thanks Jay.
I am continually amazed at how much better the close ups turn out compared to the whole aircraft shots. It's my latest obsession:

Gratuitous plugging... ehehe

Glenn must got the flu from me...he plugs every single chance, let's help him get more hits!  Laugh out loud

At least in Sydney we have more variety of photo spots to choose, I think Heathrow have less spots than Sydney does and most photo from LHR are that tight 3/4 front...every single approach shot from 27L! Would like to see more A2A turn out of LHR!

Shame that only down to me and Frank Schaefer shooting SLR and slides...everyone gone with digital totally. Oh well, you missed the fun of trading slides. Go visit http://www.auctiontransportation.com

Another boring day at Sydney...but there are endless possibilities yet to be explored about photos from Sydney. Every single upload hopefully will be a good quality and new idea.

Totally agree... 101%

Tell that to the photographer who had 49 pictures accepted that were taken at LHR last weekend though, where only two of those 49 were anything other than standard approach shots...

Eeek.... 6 pictures is a bit of an over plug.
Thanks Sam - glad to have to piss taken out of me to bring me down to Earth.

I love Sydney, but to be honest.... can't wait to visit most of you overseas.

Our biggest traveller Sam can't stop raving about Indonesia, JFK, South America and South Africa (Heathrow mentioned somewhere in the list)... not to mention the several top quality blokes that have shown him around at each of them (you know who you are).
I hope you can make way for me sometime.

And bottom line.... if you're a newbie to Sydney, contact me. I will always be happy to drive you around and show you the spots. Then again, that's the Aussie attitude you'll get from nearly every single one of us.

Come on down.... if you can survive the flight hours required.

Glenn

Glenn,

We tried to show Sam around Manchester - great place for photos (7th most popular on a.net) but sadly not good enough for a.net's "Mr Heavy" - far too many Jungle Jets and not enough Jumbos! If you can handle the smaller stuff (less hits, so less appealing for Sam) then I'd be pleased to meet you when you come to the UK.

Andy

PS: Seems like despite several visits to Sydney, I have only two pictures from there on the DB... Time to warm up the scanner I think! Big grin

Thanks Andy,

Yes, I saw the video footage of MAN and had all your mugs pointed out to me. I'll be about to pick several of you out through the cloudy weather simply by finding a white lens or two  Smile

Sam, your stats may be correct but I think you'll find that your camera types are not. The majority of my work here is taken on print film and scanned. Joe has also only recently gone digital and the majority of his work is slides, Anton uses print, Neville's shots are majority print/slide with a 10D recently making it's way onto his equipment list and Norbet was also until very recently a film man.

I also have done a little slide shooting myself.

Colin, I've got tonnes more bugsmashers to upload - it's just finding the time to do it all!

Craig I remember you have the E0S50E or Elan 2 ....and Anton shoot prints with his SYD uploads and so as others ...but the type I put up there is base on what people use now...I should of mention it beforehand....obviously lot of scan done previously by most of us are prints/slides before we across into DSLR era. Now there is only Frank and myself, prehaps a few others still shoot analog...

Not the expert on world aviation, but from my few small number of visits to airports other than Sydney, I can certainly see we have it easy.
For a start, our airport has the smallest area of any of the Australian capital city airports ensuring the fences are as close to the action as possible. Compare this to the largest, Brisbane - where the only decent spot becomes useful after about 10am (due to Sun), and is also dependent on wind.
We can always position ourselves at Sydney to take advantage of conditions.

Better still, multiple locations are sufficient for particular shots allows for the same action to be taken from two different angles.

Although Sam has provided a list of the biggest uploaders, then excludes two major groups.
1. The photographers who don't upload, but are still "fixtures" at the airport (e.g. John, Merv)
2. The younger photographers who have limited transport and limited funds.

I've seen some of the latter, and unfortunately have had to rejected numerous shots that would have otherwise been perfect given the right training and equipment. I consider it part of my duty as a screener, to help these newer submitters (from Sydney and elsewhere). Give them a bit of direction, and allow their work to be shown on the site. They may not be as experienced as the Frank's, Craig's and Sam's.... but the potential is there.

I would welcome these shooters to visit the YSSY message forum too:

As you may recall Glen, I was fortunate enough to be standing next to you at the time I took this. After about 6 attempts this one turned out half decent, luckily SYD was using the 07 runways as well as the weird skies due to the bush fires.

It's a shame I didn't meet any more of you SYD a.netters whilst I was there. I sure am missing that city, & hope to return one day.

Regards, Ned.

Soulman,

Yes, Sam's unique overseas shots pull hits, but even he was surprised by the fact that his Sydney shots had a excellent average..... but I'll leave stats to Sam.
