Final Concorde Flight: Public Urged To Stay Away

Thu Oct 16, 2003 8:59 pm

The BAA are being as nice and ever:

--- ---
Concorde enthusiasts are being warned not turn up at Heathrow for the supersonic aircraft's final flight.

The Metropolitan Police and BAA Heathrow are strongly advising members of the public to stay away because the London airport has not got the space, reported Ananova.

A joint statement warned: "There are only very limited viewing facilities on the north side of the airport and the general public should not expect to be accommodated by turning up on the day."

Concorde's last commercial flight on October 24 coincides with many school half-term holidays and is expected to be one of the airport's busiest days of the year.

There will be no vantage points for spectators within the central terminal area. Anyone using this area as a look out will be moved on by police who will also be watching out for people parking illegally.

The spectators' viewing area remains closed on Department for Transport advice, as will the car park roofs.

There will be no special parking arrangements available and existing car parks are already heavily used.

BAA Heathrow is looking at implementing traffic and other limitations to ensure public safety.
--- ---

What would it really cost to put a few security staff on the car park roofs, and perhaps open the viewing area just for the day?  Angry

How are the authorities in New York dealing with this?

I can see where BAA is coming from but I love their philosophy that if they say please stay away the public will think, oh, ok, BAA wants me to stay away, I will.

Wake up BAA, of course the event is a logistical nightmare but an event like this isnt the sort of thing you can tell people to stay away and they will.

Most people dont care they wont be "accommodated" all most people want to do is stand somewhere and watch Concorde land!

Note to BAA : Contact Manchester Airport about how to coupe with large crowds of aviation enthusiasts!

Do they really have much hope of deterring the estimated 250,000 that are going to attend? If they have enough Police to drive a quarter of a million fans away, surely they have enough to provide the security needed for such an event? I mean, why send xxxx cops out to drive people away (and probably start a mass riot!), when you can use the same amount of cops to police the event. Wouldn't that make for a much more peaceful resolution?

I hope that at least the 500000 expected visitors will turn up, like this they will realize how nonsense their statements are.

They should better look at MAN, and try to learn some things.

Yup , sounds like the BAA are up to there usual tricks !

You may want to go to an airport that is "spotter friendly" and laying on special facilities for the last flight or tour Big grin

could it be by any chance that they are not going to make a huge amount of money through it ? Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I will still be there. BAA have got to get their act together. As if people are going to stay away because BAA have said the airport does not have space.

You're not going to stop us BAA. Now you've told the public to stay away, you might get even more visitors!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Assholes was the word that comes to mind, and it wasn't directed towards the people who will visit LHR to see Concorde in eight days time.

Can't they just do the last flight at AMS?  Nuts

Anyway, I'll be coming too, I already booked myself a hotel in London and a Eurostar. Even if they had enough police to shuttle us out, where would they leave us? Ain't no prison in the UK big enough to hold that large amount of people! Unless they convert the dome! (hope this remark won't backfire on me  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

WE the public paid for the bloody aircraft in the first place, at least let us see it land commercially for the last time, its like paying for a meal, but you dont get to eat it.
My 6am MAN-LHR flight was booked 3 weeks ago, and Ill be at LHR all day, lol, This country makes me laugth sometimes it really does.
If BAA are worried about loosing profit, why dont they see the event to advertise themselves, theyve nothing to loose by it, as the whole world will be there on that day.

Anyone intrested in meeting up on fri, maybe a Airliners.net get-together, I think itd be a nice idea to meet and greet some fellow enthusiasts.
If anyone wants to just post here and we'll arrange something perhaps.

(Even if im dead ill be at LHR!!!, lol thats a promise, but hopefully i wont be lol)
Its not the fall that kills u, its the sudden stop at the end..

As usual the BAA decline to join us in the real World.
They are far too busy working out how to squeeze an extra few retail outlets into Terminal 5.

The bad news is expect to be hassled and moved on, I have it on good authority that the security operation is going to be enormous and they are going to be very intolerant.
Don't even think of bringing a car near LHR that day, the tunnel is going to be closed off and anything illegally parked is going to be towed. Thr car parks are going to be reserved for passengers only.

Just how bad they think things are going to be, the Air Traffic Controllers at Heathrow tower are having to park where I work, the London Terminal Control Centre in West Drayton, and then be bussed over to LHR with a Police escort.

Another gigantic PR f**k up by BAA, but to be honest did we expect anything different?

I think it will be highly amusing if the BAA set up some big grandstand overlooking the 27s, and then the winds mean 09s have to be used, in fact I'd be LMAO...

Hmmm... BAA can kiss my @$$ if they think I'm staying away.  Wink/being sarcastic

I've got Wednesday off work to go see her at MAN and Friday off work to go see her at LHR. To be honest, I'd be bloody amazed to see even 10k people there.

Sure, it's an Anglo-French (almost said British!) icon but apart from the diehard aviation fans and a smattering of interested bystanders, do you think the great British public will be able to put aside their apathy to make the effort to come and stand in the autumnal weather to watch an aeroplane land? and 500,000 people? Hmmmmm!

Due to an important meeting I won't be able to make it to LHR that day unfortunately. However, I've been able to say goodbye to this magnificent piece of artwork back in July and August...

It appears as if BBC will be broadcasting this event? In that case, I'll certainly try to watch it or get it on tape.

Skymonster: think it will be highly amusing if the BAA set up some big grandstand overlooking the 27s, and then the winds mean 09s have to be used, in fact I'd be LMAO...
--> So would I, so would I. Or maybe they're building more than one grandstand, all on different locations, to cope with different wind directions?...nah...  Laugh out loud

Anyway, have fun guys. Give here a worthy goodbye!

Ivan

PS: I wonder who'll first upload his pics of this final scheduled Concorde flight, and how fast it'll get accepted. Not to speak of the number of hits it'll get.

It is just wonderful how enthusiasts are in one mind about this . . . BAA and her security folks ought to be less naive and be more realistic . . . well-managed, it could actually be a unique Public Relations exercise for them.

And I also loved the reminder that the British public paid for the Concordes in the first place, and therefore deserves the right to bid farewell to this beautiful plane . . . I wish BA and BAA are more mindful of this fact.

I wished so much that I could be there to see this final flight too . . . but its a long way to travel from BKK to LHR for that (and risk being shut out, told to move on or be overwhelmed by the crowd - being vertically-challenged, I would probably end up seeing the backs of the crowd) . . . but my fond memories and feelings for the Concorde . . . and my support reach out to all aviation enthusiasts who are still going to LHR for this event.

And to underscore the futility of BAA's call . . . why not bring your entire family and others there too . . . make the airport a festive place for a day.

Well, just checked www.weather.co.uk and found out that easterly winds are being forcasted for next friday... so 09L will be used, I guess....

Now, I've made numerous trips to LHR but always just on days were the 27's were used. Question: I remember havin' read plenty of times that there is a free shuttle bus from the main terminal area to terminal 4 (I guess) that has a a stop near RWY 09L... Can anyone tell me were I can find that busstand and what number the bus has (I guess it'll be cramped on friday though...!) and also were to get out.. MTIA

IwantaBBJ: There's a free busline, H30, which takes you to BA Waterside. Get off the bus there and walk back for 10 minutes or so to where the bus came from (i.e. the route the bus followed to get you to BA Waterside). You'll pass the RWY 09L lighting poles. There you have a pretty decent view of RWY 09L arrivals.

The 'Grandstand' is already in place by the visitors centre and there is absolutely nothing grand about it at all. The view from many of the seats will be of nothing but the perimeter fence-even those at the back will be disappointed if there is a bus/van/lorry going past at the vital moment.

If that is the prize for winning the draw I would hate to see what the losers get.

Everybody loves Concorde and BAA yet has the audacity to tell people to stay away. One just has to remember that Concorde is an icon and will live forever in everybody's minds - something that cannot be said about BAA.

All that has to be said is - by all means go! They would never be able to march off a really large crowd. If the perimeter is very bad then go to Myrtle Ave or wherever spotters hang out - the approach lights may be patrolled though. Above all, this is real history here and BAA would be very naive and blind not to realize that.

ok, this may seem a stupid question but......

Will Concorde be stopping for shots or is it going straight to the BA Maintainance area?
And, do you think they will taxi it around the airfield so everyone can see it?

Wouldnt it be cool, if it stopped and all of the crew went out onto the wing to say there last good byes!

Nice thought, airplanepics

Of course the first of the Concorde trio will have to stop whilst the met police assemble and the barriers are drawn back.

All the traffic that is expected might cause be a jam preventing safe operation of the barriers (or will the police camp there all day to prevent such problems - cant see it!), in which case Concorde will stop for a very long time!

I suppose that the Concorde will go to its normal maintenace hangar. This would mean it has to cross the road. Will this road be completely closed to make sure we enthiousiasts don't get this last chance for a close-up or will it be open?

Also, if anyone happens to know, at what time(s) will the Concordes be towed/taxi to the maintenance area?

I also understand that BA are erecting barriers around the Concorde maintennance areas to ensure noone gets shots through the fence.

The road between the Hatton Cross to the Enfield Road roundabout will be shut from 14.00 to 18.30. There are already barriers on the pavement to prevent cars parking and the yellow 'no parking' cones dotted around. Whether you can get shots from the roundabout end, near 27R on the day, I don't know. Some guys got the take-off today but the Police were jittery, ordering people to move on.

As for the barrier around the BA Base, near the Concorde Hanger, this is more to stop accidents on the A30 by drivers slowing down to have 'a look' and being distracted, etc. It isn't aimed at photographers.

The most worrying thing is are the Police going to move anyone and everyone away from the 27R perimeter fence, northern side on Friday? I'm not optimistic. If the Met. Police bring in colleagues from other locations, these aren't going to take any nonsense.

I agree with CIVP , more MET officers will be required and they have not dealt with the public order situation that will materialise.

My guess is that a few will take their orders to the letter so to speak which will fuel a "them v us" scenario - unfortunately there will only be one winner from this!

unfortunately for me im at work and will miss this event, whatever the police are like i really would prefer to be there!
