Emirates 747 Rejected Take-off

Normally I would never think of plugging a picture, so I do apologize, but this one you might want to have a look at.

An Emirates Sky Cargo 747 taking-off with an off-center nose wheel. Resulting in lots of smoke, aborted take-off, emergency services rushing out, runway closed etc. All ended well with a second attempt to take-off.

Hello very impressives pictures you have here!!
But I have a question, well not a photographic matter but how the nose wheel can stay off center after entering the rwy prior to takeoff?

Some problem with hydraulics, pilot forgot to steer back the nose wheel to the center, or maybe accelerating too fast while still making the turn?

Any technical info would be greatly appreciated.

They were luck that the tyres did not burst.

I wouldn't have continued with that take off until an Engineer had checked out the tyres.

Just think that when an F1 car locks up a wheel for a split second, that creates a flat spot on the tyre, imagine what those tyres must have looked like after that !!!.

I still have no idea why the nose-wheel was not centered. From the start of the take-off until the complete stop was about 600 meter or so.

Tower warned the cockpit crew about the heavy smoke and within 10 seconds the emergency crew turned out (they must have been sitting in their trucks, amazingly fast).

The fire dept. monitored the nose gear for a while but no close up check by an engineer was conducted.

After 15 minutes the pilot did give a short explanation to the tower about 'some system not set right and they had fixed it' and 'he felt confident about the situation to give it another attempt' but it was difficult to understand. The tower gave the pilot the option for a push back to the start of the runway.

The pilot asked to take the nearest exit to get back in line with waiting traffic (already 6 planes waiting) but the tower, probably worried about the very sharp exit turn it had to take, asked if 2300 meters of runway was enough, and after some calculations were made, it was.

After the successful take-off the runway was visually inspected by airport authorities for remaining debris and operations continued.

Besides the full left rudder, also note engine #4, it seems not operative. With a shutterspeed of 1/400, f/2.8 it expect it to have blurred like the other fanblades did.

Did I get that right?

First they accelerate with the nose gear twisted to the side, pushing the tyres sidewards over the concrete. Then, after some minutes, they take of from the position where they stopped, without a thorough check of the gear and wheels?

Is that standard procedure at Atlas Air? I am just wondering about the forces when you drag the tyres sidewards for some 100ms....

Thats why pilots must always make sure that their nose gear is straightened out after turning into position at the threshold. Even if it means moving down the runway for a hundred feet or so.

But this case, I guess it was some computer realtated error.

The rudder is pointing the wrong way if it was meant to keep the aircraft on the tarmac as the nose wheel is steering to the left you would apply right rudder to compensate.
It looks like an hydraulic problem to me as both the nose gear and rudder are trying to make a left turn.
I am not sure about the 744 but on the aircraft I know the nose wheel steering works on the rudder pedals so in this case it's left pedal put to the metal or by crew error(not likely) or by system error.
