Self Plug Your Underrated Shots

Sat Jun 26, 2004 3:49 pm

Ever have a shot that you uploaded and expected it to do much better than it did in terms of views? Ever get disappointed in the rankings?

I thought it would be cool if we all shared with each other our 3 favorite shots that slipped passed that goalie unseen.

A previous sunset shot did well (but it had two other active planes in-frame), and I expected this wobbly crosswind shot to do much better than it did. 697 hits after about a month in the d/b.

A few people liked my JFK Saudi rotation shot, which surprised me after I had a similar one with this Atlas 747 which didn't do too great.

This was accepted I think just before the big downtime we had the other day, so maybe some didn't get to see it. I just thought it was a nice close rotation shot with some fogging effects around it with decent clarity. Maybe not all that great though.

What are your three?

What do you think of the other people's choices?

Less than 200 hits in 6 years time. The quality is not up to today's standards anymore, as it is a scanned print. The actual print looks very nice though. I should scan the negative one day. The plane landed in the rain with tons of vapour trailing behind it. How I wish I could have taken it with my current camera gear! (Photo taken with Canon AE-1 & Soligor 85-205mm f3.8 zoom)

A newer one that I personally like a lot, but didn't do very well:

I really like the symmetricity of the sillouette.

Thanks for another opportunity to plug Phil... Big grin (I stuck to 2 shots, there are -of course- many more)

I really thought this one would hit reasonably well. It's quite a sharp image and I just generally like this picture personally!  Smile

Same goes for this one, you may say ahhh it's a boring ass side on approach shot. But again, I think it's pretty smart due to the type of aircraft.

Also this one, ground shots @ LGW usually hit well. But this one has had quite a while in the DB but hasn't hit too well.

Well, if you insist...
The showing for these two didn't completely surprise me because 1.) they're military and, 2.) black & white is typically the 'kiss of death' for hits:

This is the prototype Rafale and the angle is fairly unique.

I am actually not unhappy with the response these have received but had hopes they would have generated more when first posted. The Stearman is one of my favorite aviation images with the pilot waving as he slips down the runway.

Plugging underrated shots ... I think we've been there & done that, but anyways.  Wink/being sarcastic

Nice shots posted here. Especially Erwin's MD-11 is remarkable. 381 views? That's very low & yet another example that hits don't tell much about the quality of a photo.

Here are my 3 picks—pretty recent examples. They were taken in Zurich a few weeks ago.

TS: thanks!

INNflight: that dornier looks sooo sad!

How come great photo's don't make it? Do you have to be within the first five pages of the "Most Popular Of last 24-48 hours"? I guess. If you don't get a shot in there, it won't gather many hits. Lots of quality and rare shots are lost in the 500.000+ database...

Did nobody ever thought about some rating you can give to pictures? Just to express your appreciation.

Kind regards and keep posting, there are some very nice shots in this thread!

Cool idea for a topic. Here are mine:

I've always liked this one, under the wing of another aircraft with the fuel tanks open and the way the wingtip of the first plane matches up with the vertical stabilizer of the second plane. Currently at 664 hits.

Photo © 737doctor

This next one I thought people would find more interesting than they did. The plane on jacks and off the ground. I like the way the plane dominates the shot, from that perspective it looks like the plane is towering over everything. Currently at 473 hits.

Photo © 737doctor

Interesting to note that both shots were accepted at the same time.

The jury is still out on this last one as it was recently accepted, but one thing I've learned is that people don't really care about tail shots. They love cockpit shots and engine shots, but not tail shots. My least popular photo (at least it was before my recent round of uploads and probably will be again before it is all over with) is a tail shot, but not the one below. I think that this one, sadly will be underrated also because it is a tail shot. The colors really pop on this one and it's such an interesting angle, but it will probably be relegated to the back pages of my shots in the DB. Currently at 134 hits. Time will tell...

Anyway, there is some great shots in this thread and everyone should be proud of their work as I am proud of each and every one of my shots that made it, regardless of hits.

I try to resist, but just can't. This is far too good topic, thank Bigphilnyc  Big thumbs up

I have a lot of pictures, which do not have many hits, but a few which I really thought gone get more. I have also some which make a lot of hits, which has been a huge surprise.

So here are some of mines, whit not so many hits...

Well, I just thought that it would look interesting enough  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Not everyday sight on every airport, but looks like helicopters just are not interesting enough. I gone upload helicopters anyway  Insane

535 hits since February 5, 2004. Like on first one, I just thought...

Maybe I could pick another three instead of those, but those come to my mind when I went thru my pictures. Even I'm not "hunt" hits, it's nice to have time to time picture than get more hits.

And what comes to those pictures above, I didn't expect those to be #1 of the day. Just thought those gone get more hits. For me, over 1000 is quite well. It's amazing if so many people even find my picture in this database and see it as interesting enough to take a closer look, even those are not cockpit shot or something like that  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

This one got rejected for badquality, but I don't care. I should really update the caption for that photo, it is completely wrong, but anyway,

A javelin jet should count for something?

The first photo shown is of a JetRanger which crashed Thursday, killing the pilot.

Lots of very nice pictures. Thanks for sharing.

N317AS nice work there, I like the irony of the first and the panning of the second.

And good to see some military aircraft, choppers and props in there guys.

Here are my three favorites that did not do well. all three have between 100-200 hits and have been on the database for a while. All three are special to me due to the background and or weather/field conditions and were all taken at my homebase airport of LGA. I hope some of you enjoy these, and Phil thanks for starting this topic !

I like these shots, but none really seemed to "take off" like I thought they would.

I've had very bad luck, only 2 pics that the screeners liked (out of 30+), all the other pics ended up in myav.net

My best pick, doomed to be ignored in myaviation.net:

And the only two I have on a.net, not much better than the everyday A.net photo:

I thought this was one of my more unique shot of the Blue Angels, but has not garner as much hits as my other aerial shots of the Angels.
