Macau And Hong Kong Info!

Sat Aug 07, 2004 12:39 am

Hi all,

2 weeks today i will be travelling to Hong Kong for 7 days and whilst there i plan to visit Macau and partake in some airplane photography. I was hoping some people in the know could provide me with information regarding places to shoot at both airports as i have no clue!

I would really like to know where to shoot from at Macau to get those shots of the planes going down the taxiway over the bridge!

Any advice would be muchly appriciated!!!

Cheers,

Chris

I was at HKG a few years ago, I went down to the HAECO building. Great place to spot, landing or takeoffs-I was there for 7 hours straight and did not get bored. I can't give specific directions because I had a driver. But its a great spot. You may want to post this in Civil, you will have a good response from HKG users.

Hope that helps some.

Chris,

Shooting at HKG really all depends on which runways are in use. I spent over a week out there shooting video and slides and I have only a couple of words to pass on...never again.
First off, if they use rwy 25s, then you have a chance to get some nice arrival shots on 25R shooting from near the Regal Airport Hotel (around the corner from it by the water/seawall. If they're on the 7s, better have a lens greater than 300mm as I was out there with a 70-210mm and came back with zero. Video was pretty much nada except when I went with Daryl Chapman, Colin and a couple of other locals Saturday morning on an illegal boat ride to the island near the end of rwy 07R! Again, you need a 300mm or greater lens and for slide shooting, that's more than I like to shoot with.

Macau on the other hand can provide some nice possibilities. You can shoot from just outside of the terminal, on the departures level, to the left (as you face the tarmac). Getting the taxi shots over the bridge may require you getting airside, can't remember as I was rampside with the airport authority when I was there. You can write them on their website and request a possible photo tour, never hurts.

Hope that helps

Saw some people, from a plane, who were taking shots at HKG from a shelter type building the other day, it was down near HAECO. Only a chain link fence between them and the taxiway.

By the way, the absence of GA activity at Hong Kong puzzled me.
Other than some government aircraft, 2 biz jets and some helicopters and a hangar marked "Piper" there was no signs of conventional GA aircraft.

Is there somewhere else GA use in the Hong Kong area, or does all the serious money go in to boats and cars?

Chris,

The website suggested by Mdwalkman pretty much sums up the most frequently visited spotting/photo locations, and with pretty good details on how to get there. The other spots that I know of would require either a major effort to get there and/or a major investment in hefty glass.

Virtually all departures uses the south runway (07R/25L) and landings uses the northern one (07L/25R), except for cargo flights which usually land on the southern one due to the location of the cargo terminal. Notwithstanding any major weather systems (e.g. typhoons, monsoons, etc.) affecting HK, the runway usage pattern during these typical summer times would likely be 07 from morning till around lunchtime, switching to 25 for the afternoon, and back to 07 by late afternoon or early evening.

So, when are you arriving?

I arrive 2 weeks today at 16:30.

By heft glass what do you mean??? I have a 100-400 with a 10Dand a 1.4xtc which i use sometimes, is that enough??? I wanted to get a line up shot at the cargo terminal in particular and a shot that over looks the whole place as a plane departs! Other than that i mainly like ground shots and rotation/touchdown shots, not too into approach shots!

For Macau

From the airport, there is a bridge link to the China Macau Hotel, and take the lift up to 9th Floor which is the lobby, and head outside the door, you will put yourself on much higher ground looking down on some of the stand and outer runway and taxiway. That is the best spot I have found, no hassle, no fence in your photos...

For Hong Kong, I think the new airport for spotting is crap. No one spot allow a decent slide, and that's my miniumum requirement, have been avoid HKG for the last few years.

alot of shooting at HKG also depends on the pollution conditions, as Sam said you can't get a decent slide shot at CLK let alone a good day that is smog free.

i shot there in april and found the pollution killed alot of my photos! you should think about a trip to Shenzhen while your in the area, spotting is very good there! lack of fences and can get close to the action too!

damn it...HKG is so difficult, with the haze, weather, long tele and everything.....I just read what Jeff de Vore said.......and now the only time I will go there is if I know I can get on the ramp. Not going there to waste of my time, frustrating airport (but great for passenger!)

Sam, I have spotted over at CLK many many times, with Mr. Chapman, Colin and many other respected people. You may not appreciate the movements at this airport, and you have probably not been fortunate enough to experience a nice day. I get fine photos at this airport. One thing I would agree with though, the haze.

Chris, if you need anything, do not hesitate to contact us on the forum over at www.hkplanes.com We might be able to arrange to meet up and spot together.

Not a good time to go to that area, Typhoons around at the moment.

Hong Kong is under a blanket of thick smog now, people are being warned to stay indoors....

Don't miss the opportunity to pick up cheap photo gear while you're there. It's probably the best place in the world to hunt for bargains.

Sam, the old airport didn't have as many new movements as the new one has allowed, at Kai Tak, it did get a bit boring, the same things just kept coming in. With the new airport, new airlines and aircraft have visited. We look back now to just over 3 years ago and a lot of planes that we used to get don't fly there anymore.

Every single spotter that we have brought around in hong kong has been very satisfied and most come back for more. I understand your deeply into the photography side, but the things you see in Hong Kong could easily entertain a non-local spotter.

Dosen't matter how the traffic in the old airport, nothing, can ever replace that 13 IGS approach!

Sam

P.S. Passing thru HKG for 3 hrs transit in 2 weeks time, guess I won't do any spotting  Big thumbs up

Dstc47,

Not sure which airport you visited but it for sure was not CLK! For one thing there is no "Chain Link" fench around CLK. We have very large state of the art security fence and inside that a more standard fence.

As for the "Piper" hangar  Nuts...... CLK also gets its share of biz jets. In the past few days I've seen a RAAF BBJ, USN BBJ, G4's, G5's, DA900's, HS125 and a Global Express.

I do hope you never make a report on Hong Kong  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'm not sure if there's a chain linked fence or any shelter from which you can spot near HAECO, but there are some photography possibilities around HKG. And yes, my website at http://www.hkplanes.com should provide you with as much information as you need. If not, please leave a message on the Hong Kong Spotters forum and someone will usually provide an answer quite quickly.

Welcome to Hk! If you want weather information go to http://www.hko.gov.hk/contente.htm but I'm afraid it's not too promising these few days. I hope you still get to explore around the airport a bit. If you can't get any good photos during the day, try some night photos when you leave (assuming your flight leaves at night). They are very good from within the airside part of the terminal.

Unfortunately I will not be able to go to the airport these few days, but please feel free to ask if you got any questions. I met Kevin Cadd when I went to Manchester two years ago. Please say hi to him.

Chris, you don't need a tripod for night shots from within the terminal. In fact a tripod won't work. what you have to do is to rest the lens flat on the glass, then take a photo using a longish (1 or 2 second) exposure. It always works for me when using my DSLR. You might need to shield the area aroudn the lens a bit to avoid reflections though.

Here's an example:

Cheers for that!!! Very nice shot, will have to try it out, will have the tripod with me anyway so i guess i can try it, luckily it has movements which mean i can pivot the centre column to press the lens against the glass!!!

Hong Kong is such a beautiful city, a tripod is a must for anyone coming here!!!

What time do the best movements come into Maccau???

cheers, Chris

ha ha would you believe it - last minute a/c swap. You now have G-VHOL !!!!.

See if they will upgrade you to Premium the next day if you can stay an extra day - they will possibly be looking for volunteers to stay over - should get some $$ and a free hotel for the night too if they are !!!.

Let us know what happened.

Hahahaha!

Chris, if I were you, STAY IN HONG KONG! lol

Go early and volunteer to stay in Hong Kong, as Leezy said, they will stick you up in a hotel and put you on tomorrows flight they also sometimes give you a free return flight on Virgin Atlantic as well...

G-VSHY is currently scheduled to operate the route tonight (which means on saturday it will be operating VS201 back to the UK).

Not too sure why it was down graded to an A343 yet...

75k miles plus upgrade plus a nights at the Ritz Carlton, you surely are a very lucky person!!!

Anyway, how did you like Hong kong and did you get to do any spotting or photography at the airport?

See my homepage for a comprehensive guide to spotting and photography at HKG

Chris,

That is a fantastic deal. Pretty handy having inside info and advance notice hey !!.

Could try and push them for Upper too if you turn up in smart clothes (trousers/shirt/shoes - like Justin wears  Big grin ) on the day - worth a try they might do it just because you are cheeky enough to ask. I've seen it work before in the past in those situations when people have pushed that little bit more by being cheeky - or at least ask to use the C/House !!.

Congrats anyway.
