No idea how to get a hold of this person. You probably have a photo in here.

Drop the hammer Chad, let 'em have it. Unauthorized use is becoming a big problem. I'd be pretty upset if they had my photos in there too. And you're right - most of those 253 images ARE from airliners.net.
I'd rather shoot BAD_MOTIVE

Best way to probably do it, is to email the owner of the domain: colofinder.net.

Although I did mention that he will probably be contacted by other photographers, I didnt mention anything about removing their photos as I do not know if they gave him permission or not. I ll leave that up to the photographer of the photo.

He's also got official Scaled Composites pictures on his site too--a bunch of them.

Either he's ignorant or just doesn't care.

why do you guys get so upset about this? If you post your pictures online, people will help themselves to them. So what?

Have any of you ever downloaded an MP3, or ripped a CD, or saved some porn to your hard drive? Its the same thing.

No big deal, the guy isnt making any money off of these shots, and he has left the copyright info on there...no need to get your knickers wadded up.,

We get our "knickers wadded up" over someone stealing photos, and you get yours wadded up over people's fascination with uploading shots at a larger size. Some battles just seem more important than others. To each his or her own.

Royal, are you being serious? What if he turns around and sells one of these stolen photo's? For a copyright to have any value, you need to protect your property upon any infringement.

I am very surprised to see you say this, given you do sell photographs.

"Have any of you ever downloaded an MP3..."
In that comparison us photographers would be the musicindustry/artists and as we all know they are not very fond of people sharing copyrighted music over the internet and thus do all they can to prevent it.

It is incredible how some of us are so "laissez-faire" about the fact that our intellectual property is being ripped off.

We need to change that mindset. Some of us (perhaps I should say most of us) go to great lengths investing time in equipment, tracking and skills to pursue aviation photography and the least-very least- somebody could do is ask us for permission to use our pics.

Blah.

There are 5 sites like this for every 1 you find out about.

The only surefire way to stop your pictures from getting stolen is to not post them on airliners.net. The exposure you get outweighs the risk, its a trade-off.

Now if it were a commercial site, I would agree. I've had a ton of pictures stolen, and am currently in ligitgation with 2 newspapers and Fox News of Australia.

Pick your battles.

And for those who turn it into a chance to insult me, all I can say is "Have a nice day"

I agree with Royal, no need to go nuts. The photo id # is there, the copyright and name of the person is there.

I wouldn't go around calling him a bastard, and 'dropping down the hammer.'
He's made no moolah, don't go nuts!

You should look at that fuckin letsroll911 site, and pages similar to that, tons of stolen photos. I would never want any of my photos used for the purpose that those people are using them for.

I agree with Royal. The guy downloaded the piccies (which millions of people do) and instead of keeping them in a folder on his hard drive, he put them in a folder on his website. He made no claim that they were his photos, and is not seeking any apparent financial gain... so hey, its personal use in my mind. Hell, I have photos from other people in my online galleries... cuz I want to show my friends what real photogs can do.

Agreed. There is absolutely no level of Digital Rights Management when it comes to pictures on this site, or any other that I know of. The technology simply isn't there yet. It is getting better with music, and look how it is transforming the industry.

"Pick your battles."

I am. When I opened the link above, I was greeted with a political message that I don't want to be associated with.

True story: A very young kid, I think 12, emailed me to use one of my shots for his police helicopter webpage. If a 12 year old knows the right way to go about obtaining a picture for use on a webpage, why can't others? I let him use the picture for free, it is not about money always.

So here is an alternative "business model" apparently pursued :

The model of Ambush Marketing defined.

A) Leave the merchandise unguarded and vulnerable in the shop window (with no glass pane) facing a very busy street (excess of 100000 people stop at window/day)

B) leave a very small note attached to afore mentioned merchandise informing of copyright protection.

c) HOPE that among the curious and interested who steal the merchandise are wealthy individuals or individuals working for wealthy companies.

d) Once the afore mentioned entity with deep pockets is identified as the party with an infraction then set a lawyer upon them and recover the Super fee for usage.

e) Ignore the small fry.

This is kinda of classic because the hunter becomes the hunted.

Frankly, I think the plain old fashioned sale over the counter is better for the community at large...and the model above is NOT practiced by me.

Ben,

Ok, this was kind of difficult since you didnt follow directions in the upload process. (3 different names for 8 photos in the database)  Confused

Photographers name and e-mail address [Help] Full name:
(Use same as on previous uploads)

You currently have 8 photos in our database.........................................

Anyhow, judging by this I see why it wouldnt bother you. To some of us it does matter.

Maybe he is just an innocent guy with an innocent aviation photo library. I am not going to sit back and do nothing though.

Since I am no expert on copyright law I need to ask this:

Did any of you people ask permission of the owners of the planes you photographed to take the picture and place it on a public site? Do you need their permission? Could they turn around and ask you to remove the photos and/or sue you for monetary damages?

My personal feelings are that this is harmless. He didn't try to hide where he got the photos from and clearly isn't trying to make any profit from it. Just my thoughts.

Jaxs170: You don't need permission from the aircraft owner if you took the shot from a public place.

My personal feelings are that this is harmless.

Well, I don't. My image is clearly copyrighted, it states so right on the image. Do you feel it is harmless to make a copy of your friends music CD or computer software?
