You are right. Too many moon shots. Rejected due to "I already have photos like this on the database" ouch. Hey, anybody know about appealing? My photo is entitled 340moon.jpg but when I hit the appeal a photo entitled airbus340 comes up....

Nice one Mark, you know, everytime there is full moon I spent some hours looking to the sky hoping that I can see a plane flying through it, even last night I did it. Well, I'll keep trying at least once per month.

It is very long...maybe a 6 series.... It was very high and quite far away. 2 intermittent red and green dots way far away in the dark. It too almost a minute before the plane appeared as a silhouette and then dissapeared

DOES anyone have any clue where the (almost exactly East to West) flight path goes to at that altitude or is that impossible.....Here is my guess, definately not New York or Newark or Phily...Way too high and way to East to West for that.....

Thanks for the nice comments.
I waited and watched the night before for a long time. I noticed that the transatlantic flights were inbound and outbound at two specific points in the sky. One point was overhead. Those jets were much lower than at the other point. The overhead point was not in line with the moon...so I had to settle for the far away jets which make the moon look like it is towering over the "smaller" jets. So, the next night I was hoping for no clouds. Watching these two dots (red and blue lights) VERY far out coming East to West i noticed it had a chance to cross the moon....and it did. Watching the jet take shape (due to the silhouette) after not knowing what kind of plane it was is very neat! It is visible for only about 1 sec as it crosses the moon. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Mark: Exactly how do you set up to take the shot? I'm gonna guess that you set up the tripod and camera, capture the moon in the viewfinder and focus (constantly adjusting as the moon moves), and then remotely activate the shutter at the right moment. Is that how it's done?

Tripod- I use my heavy camera bag to put over my lens to weigh it down due to wind. Pre focus on moon because plane is so far out it will be in focus with the moon. Then, blast off with my finger on the shutter.

I sat on my balcony for 45 minutes... Many planes passed by, but none of them nowhere near the moon... You must have some incredible patience Mark! Big grin

For me I would have to rely on digital zoom plus the optical of my digital camera and even then it would still be no good. Smile

But damm, it truly must be a split second moment before it is all over.

My picture is a almost 100% crop of the 10D + 100-400 @ 400mm (same as your gear). So the moon is actually a very small circle in a very large black frame. Smile

Quality isn't great, but it's fun!
Just think of what Mark's 600 + 2x does! Wow!

I can imagine THAT creates some substance in the picture...
I shot in M-mode, 1/60s f7.1, but I could have done a bit longer to make it brighter (the moon wasn't at its brightest yet). I focused with AF once, then switched it to MF and left it there. It's actually quite amazing to see how fast the moon moves. After a few minutes you need to re-adjust your tripod...

Great shot Mark,
at the moment the moon in the UK rises late in the evening and is very low in the South
I need to wait for the Winter months for it to be in the right place
although I did get a shot of it the other night, but as Eduard said where are the planes when you want one Smile

This was the nearest I got last December and I stood outside in the freezing cold for hours just praying that one would cross in the right place

I will keep trying
