SLC Photo Status?

Thu Sep 16, 2004 2:10 am

It's been about a year since I've been to SLC and I was hoping someone could give me an update of the current state of things there.

Has anyone had any trouble taking photos from the garage, the old "official" viewing area or from the west side by the canal?

I'd appreciate information anyone has.

Thanks,
Tim

Garage is fine, never been bothered there.

I beleive you need to walk to the viewing park now, it is open, but not for cars.

The canal is fine, too.

I was at SLC Labor Day weekend. I didn't have any problems at the viewing park. You still can't park there. I parked in the golf course parking lot and walked over.

Several people parked along side of the road. I didn't think that was such a good idea...

Since I may be moving to the SLC area, how close is this viewing park to the airport? Are there good shots to be had at the above listed areas?

Mark,

Thinking about becoming a Morman? Hehehehehehehe.

Will you be joining us for the Nellis AFB show in November? So far Stephen (Jr.), Matt, Michael Arcellana, Rick Covington, Ben Wang and Jason Whitebird are going, Ruben Murrieta and Sam Chui say they are going, but haven't confirmed with me as of yet.

Give me a buzz on my cell phone when you get a chance.

Hi Sam,

The dates for the show are Nov. 13th and 14th. We will head to LAS very early on the 11th and shoot LAS the 11th and 12th then go to the show on the 13th, returning to LA on the 14th. You should arrive on the 10th and ride over with me.

I'll have your ladder plus it looks like a couple others as well, might even bring along the "Big Gun" 10 foot ladder just for fun.

Let me know your plans, talk to you soon.

Mike,

I'll block those dates off work and see what the airfares are like. I'll let you know...

Go3Team,

Most shots are between 75-250 mm. I believe the Skywest Embraer's were at 300mm. The Delta 764 and Fed Ex DC-10 are both about a 80mm shot if I remember correctly (I got tired of changing lens out in a dusty environment). Only downside is that the traffic is 85% Delta.

I figured it would mostly be DL and WN, but it looks as if SLC is a lot more friendly than RIC. Works for me.

Thanks Royal and Mark for the info.

I was at SLC today and I have a quick update: It looks like they're in the process of installing a chain link fence on the west side of the airport between the office park and the canal. There is already a fence surrounding the airport itself - this one seems like it is intended to prevent people from going up the hill to the canal. Currently only the poles are up and even after the fence is completed, it might not totally block access to this spot, but it will mean shooting from a place less convenient to parking areas.

I was in the garage for a little and didn't get hassled. I didn't visit the viewing area this time.

Go3Team: Royal is right - amazing photo opportunities. The view park isn't far at all. It's right next to a golf course on the south east side of the field. There's a great aerial photo on the official site here: http://www.slcairport.com/about/construction/ that will give you a good idea of where it is.

Clickhappy,

You are more than welcome to join us in LAS, shoot me an e-mail and I will give you more info.

Lemonkitty,

First of all welcome, glad you finally broke down and joined, very kewl!!! What's up with the name though, I'm trying to figure it out.

I'll be bringing Sams ladder, and two of mine (6 foot and the "Big Gun"). Doug may be going so he will probably drive his Excursion over as well, so we will have plenty of room for ladders.

Brick,

Lemonkitty is right, no excuses you must join us, Nellis is a great show and of course great shooting at LAS.

Anyone else wants to join us, let me know everyone is welcome.

Ironically I'm supposed to be in LA that Friday, but the meeting is now being tossed around so if it doesn't happen, I might join y'all up in Vegas.

Looks like I'm going to give it a 50/50 chance I'll be able to make it to the Nellis show. Rooms rates in and around Vegas are very high that weekend. Airfare isn't too bad. I've only got a limited travel budget this year (I'm trying to buy a home in Denver) so I have to be choosy what trips I take between now and February 2005. Where is everyone staying?

Rick,

Good to see you finally made it on here. Took you what, five, six years? Ironic that you signed up after all this time and I'm about ready to take a semi-permanent vacation from this website. What's with the user name too? I didn't think "Sourpuss" was taken.  Smile

Mallard made me join..hehehhehee...The username actually came from a little boy that was on one of my flights...he was only 5 years old, but he told me he had a callsign (His Father must be military!!!)...His callsign was Lemonkitty!!! I fell on the floor with laughter, but the name was cool so I used it here..hehehehehe.....And Mallard, where is everyone staying in LAS?

Jason,

Thanks, but I have already made reservations at the Gold Coast, we were just giving you a bad time anyway.

What day will you be arriving? We will arrive early on the 11th. The following are for sure going to be joining me;

Rick Covington, Ben Wang, Matt Cornell, Stephen Tornblom and Michael Arcenella, still waiting for four other folks to confirm.

Let me know your plans.

Any other A.Netters that want to join us for the Nellis AFB in LAS on the 11th, 12th, and 13th of November please let me know, obviously everyone is welcome.

I asked some guys in airport ops about photographing. They where all for it as long as you obeyed any signs and parking restrictions. Ditto from the SLC airport police.

Hi all!

May I join you for LAS and Nellis AFB show?
I'll be in California/Nevada at that time.

I'll email you Mike, there is a chance that I'll be at LGB in the beginning of November and I'd like to meet you and Doug there.

See you soon!
