Excellent Portrait Of SpaceShipOne Team

Sun Nov 28, 2004 5:08 am

Anybody see this is the latest issue of TIME?

http://www.time.com/time/2004/inventions/intro.html

Two-page spread in the magazine. Gorgeous shot of the SpaceShipOne Team by Stephen Wilkes.

A challenge to all you gearheads. Any guesses on how this shot was done? (As in set up, lighting, etc...) I figured it out. Can you?

Post your best guess. I'll chime in later.

Hasselblad H1 + 210mm? seems like a tele anyway. Natural light.
what seems to be the officer, problem?

a nice shot indeed.......thanks for posting that

if the photographer was inside a hangar it would probably cast a similar shadow as seen on the bottom part of the photo....just a guess though

Chris, definitely not a super wide. (No noticeable distortion.) Though the three are certainly being hit with a flash pop. (I am guessing a set of Pocket Wizards with a bare bulb or grid spot.) The rest is ambient.

And you're dead-on Jonathan about the hangar. The shadow on the right-hand mains are your giveaway. It's also what gives the people the silhouetted look.

There would be SO many *obvious* ways to shoot SS1. I am glad someone like Wilkes gave us something even better.

Chris...
I was actually agreeing with you.  Big grin My poor wording is to blame for the confusion.  Nuts

I figured the immediate reaction by most is that it's superwide.
